Morbid Writes #3 (March 2021)

Morbid Writes #3 (March 2021)
72 pages, A5 size, English, xerox

Interviews
Snet, Galvanizer, Draghkar, Mortal Wound, Burial, Cryptic Hatred, Intrepid, Koffin

It took 2 years to release this issue. We can see excellent print quality (laser printed) now.

The layout improved a lot too. The pages are numbered with table of content. Using page border and uses small font which make this issue 'compact' with lot to read. The editor also an artist

Gore-met food still here. This time with Angel's Hair Pasta, Feetloaf, Steamed Hams, Maxi-Pad Thai, Necrony Cocktail, Blood-red Velvet Cake. You can visual it yourself how the dishes will look like. But remember it must be 'gore'.

Others in this issue are comics, movie reviews, "Audio Nasties" (which is music review) and 11 pages on ads/flyers. Reviews are not alphabetically arranged and not rated.

The only thing I don’t like is the orange paper for cover. Keep it in white paper will be just fine. Black & white is the trve colour for zine.

Vampiria #6 (2002)

Vampiria #6 (2002)
68 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interviews
Bathory, Deinonychus, Theatre Of Tragedy, Pentagram, Blood Red Throne, Louisa John-Krol, Shining, Hungry Lucy, Jose Moral, Curachan, Diabolicum, Molombra, Testify, Centurian, Unto Ashes, Judith, Mike Bonatch

Amazing that some distro still have a copy of this issue for sale. "Elite Magazine For Elite Creatures". Man, they know how to play with words.

All glossy paper. Simple layout (3 or 2 columns per page) on dark background. I like it this way. For reviews section it is 4 columns per page.

The interviews are OK. Mostly gothic/doom band/artist. Can't remember the last time time reading 'new' interview with Bathory. This one is made after the release of Destroyer of Worlds. The late Quorthon said he already answered 124 interview before this interview after the release of that album.

The reviews, "Writing Of The Occult Scribe" is music review (album) rated out of 100, alphabetically arranged. Plenty of stuff being reviewed but the reviews are short. On the top of the page is My Kingdom Music releases (tracklist and some info. but not a review). For promo CD/demo CDr, the editor named is as "Demo-Nizzati". There are also 4 vinyl reviews.

Also interesting is the zine review, "Underground Press". They are rated on the layout like 'good', 'mediocre', 'simple'. First time I saw editor doing review like this.

I also found an advertisement of Vampiria Mag of Spain in here. Now I know there are other Vampiria zine in this planet.

I should informed you that the editor also runs a label called My Kingdom Music. This issue comes 2 Free CD sampler. I like more of the bands on the first CD.

Eternal #1 (2012)

Eternal #1 (2012)
60 pg, A4, laser xerox, Malay

Interview
Namsar, Noiratasya, Hellstorm, Mortuary Ancestor, Larrong, Immolate, Saktism, Horace Divinity, Kambing Sakti, Eastern Voice Production

Bio
Luk Tujuh, Mortuary Ancestor, Majestic East, Larrong, Immolate, Eastern Voice Production

This zine focussing on Borneo metal scene that includes not just Malaysia but will also include Brunei and Indonesia as well. That's a great concept. Some of the bio are at the first page before the interviews start. I think it's good reading them in Malay so I list them down on the bio list above.

No specific style on the layout. Couple of pages with ads and gig flyers, no page number and no table of content. Mostly using background image with no column for the text. I dont like pictures on the middle of the page because it breaks the line (the text) which a bit annoying. The xerox quality are excellent. Don't be afraid to use dark background or use more graphics if using laser printing like this.

There is a special section on "Unholy Triangle" metal scene that consist of interviews of the bands from Sarawak 'unholy triangle' scene and opinion from metalhead on this scene.

The reviews has a section called "Classick Demo" that includes the demo '93 of the controversial Bruneian band, Tombcrusher. The reviews are not rated.

My copy numbered #92/100 which actually the second 100 printing. Not sure what's the difference between the first and this version but looking at the flyers, the first 100 might use different cover however the distro selling this said no difference between the two. New issue #2 have been released. Hope this zine can continue to support their scene.

Reading this zine featuring the bands you're in contact with during your high school years sometimes motivate you a bit. I guess they are reaching 40's year old with family and kids and permanent day job but still producing stuff with their bands. While some people like me on the other hand have become a "keyword warrior" :-)

Burning Churches #9 (2012)

Burning Churches #9 (2012)
32pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Crown Ov Horns, Hekseri, Black Torment, Quintessence, Imperial Tyrants, Manzer, Wartillery, Sigh, Bestial Hordes

I miss out issue #8. I hope I can find one soon to fill the gap. This issue differs a bit because it starts with DVD reviews. The layouts are pretty much the same. The pages are not numbered but there is a table of content. The reviews are longer this time but they are still not rated.

This issue is called "The Cursed Issue" because some of the bands cancel the interview after they agree to be interviewed in the first place. I experienced this few times in the past but personally this is better than the bands that are keeping themselves in silence after getting the interview, not knowing whether they will reply or not. Even worse, not replying when we ask about the interview. Suddenly I remembered that 'Fuck Off' list that Sangwitok or Metalwarpage did.

It is amazing to know Sigh still answer fanzine. I thought they are a bit mainstream lately. Can't remember how many times I saw Mirai & Dr. Mikannibal in Terrorizer or Metal Hammer. You know, the zine still keep it tradition by having the band's discography and Sigh is probably the longest one ever in the zine history.

Domain #7 (2012)

Domain #7 (2012)
76pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Zygoatsis, Envenom, Battlestorm, Thorns of Hate, Nightwolf, Remains, Vault, Gempita Records, Lobotomy, Recrucify, Perversor, Goat Semen, Metalucifer

Article
Serial Killer: Mona Fandey

Good to see another issue of Domain. To date for me, this is best issue so far in terms of layout. Layout-wise, they are using frame/border artwork and Alan Corpse did a great job! As for the content, I have nothing to complain. Good selection of bands and the questions are interesting. I think this is the first time I read an interview with Gempita Records. For those who don't know, Gempita Records is Malaysian label which release some great vinyl title like the LP version of Sil Khannaz 1st album.

When you have Metalucifer, then you must have Neal Tanaka. Full page of him in inside the front cover and in the back cover.

The editor continues the tradition of having article on serial killer. I am not a fan of such article, but you rarely find any zine writes about Mona Fandey. You must read this. She's a witch and her victims probably killed for her black magic ritual.

Other 'tradition' is no table of content and the pages are not numbered. There is zine review and they are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

My copy is hand-numbered #195 out of 400. This issue is already sold-out from the editor. I got this by trade with member of Goatlusting Chaos. After 6 month or more I finally got the zine. As for you, I found some distro in Germany that have some copies. Get this now!

Darahhead #2 (December 2012)

Darahhead #2 (December 2012)
60 pg, A5, xerox, Malay

Interview
Succubus, Corpsereaper, Putrified Remains, Foxhole, Lavatory, Nvarathos, Demon War, Inside, Visitant, Shamanic Rites

Darahhead was a newsletter in their debut issue (if understand it right from was written in the editorial), now the second issue have evolved to a full size fanzine. And the editor is also the man behind Virus Zine. The difference between the two are the language; Darahhead in Malay while Virus in English and the size (Darahhead in A5, Virus in A4). There probably more differences or maybe not.

On the layout of Darahhead, they are combination of cut n paste or two columns MS word layout with frame artwork and uses small size font. The pages are numbered but not table of content. I wish the photocopy quality can be made better and the artwork on page 39 can be made sexier.

Reviews cover music (local stuff mostly) and zine and they are not rated.

Beside these there are also gig reviews; 2 pages of well-written gig report on Impiety gig in Sandakan and the rest are Vehemence Distortion II and KL Thrashed 2012.

This issue features lots of local bands and some with good chats. Hope to see #3 soon and can be made as a yearly publication. Some interviews are best translated to English for international metalhead to read. If Fauzi do this, he will have completed 50% of the new issue of Virus zine.

Hellfukking Metal #3 (2012)

Hellfukking Metal #3 (2012)
48 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Veinen, Assassin, Crucifixxx Sodomy, Black Feast, Midnight, Communion, Ocean Of Zero, Slaughtered Priest, Sadokist

2 years later came out the third issue. Some visible improvement (after flipping through my hand-numbered copy #079 before start reading it) is in the layout of the review section. It doesn’t have that much empty space like #2. In #3, the layout is combination of cut n paste and computer layout (2 or 3 columns per page). I personally not fond of the font type used in this issue (I am so used to see typewriter type font type in a zine). He also added flyers to fill up space.

The editor maintains the interview style (more on music and band-related question) but no longer have the additional 13 questions like #2. The longest interview (and the best in this issue) is with Assassin which is quite special for the editor.

The reviews are not rated and not alphabetically arrange and at times are very long. There is a review section entitled "From The Past Comes The Storm". It is and old demo reviews section but not necessarily from the 80's because it has one from 2002.

Xerox quality is as good as #2 only this time you can see clearer picture of the editor.

The editor also run distro/label called Dynamite Prod which is the official distributor of Into The Catacomb zine/newsletter which is a great newsletter (more info on this later). So please ask the latest distro list when contacting him.

Prostata #7 (2012)

Prostata #7 (2012)

36 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Nocturnal Breed/Conjuration, Skitsystem, Alcoholic Nightmare, Glob, Blaspherian, Agathocles, Evil Angel, Zoldier Noiz, Black Magic, Eat Pussy, Cliteater, Fondle Corpse, No Poser Please!, Tinner, Ironcunt, Mare, Stone Vengeance, TQB, Lobotomized, Obliteration, Cock ESP, Magrudergrind, Brutal Truth

Apologies for not putting the complete list of the bands here. There are few more bands which I'm not sure their name (Ukrainian bands). The zine is made in cut n paste style and use lots of pictures on the background. The editor puts humors in the interviews. Of course, that depends on how you interpret the questions. Some questions are not related with music (some bands get lots of questions like this). Black Magic & Eat Pussy consist of very short interview. The editor mentioned these are "crappy bands" but he still give them some space here for them.

The reviews are short and do not have specific section. Only half page of review times there which mean not many reviews. They are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

Quite unusual 'intro' in the editorial (I am too, saddened after knowing the death of the frog. Another life is loss ;-) ).

Not bad really, I like it despite the short review. The zine is already 7 issues old so the editor knows what's good to give to the readers. I like it better if they don't put pictures of topless ugly women.

Slowly We Rot #1 (2012)

Slowly We Rot #1 (2012)

40 pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Nokturnal, Morgue Supplier, Naetu, Infernal Death, Executer, Master, Blaspherion, Blodarv, Funebria, Atomkraft, Necrophagia

Slowly We Rot is the name to be remembered when you are talking about zine from Transilvania at this digital age. Although this is the debut issue, the content is good if not excellent. The editor (Adrian) is also the man behind Pest webzine, which have been running for many years. So have no doubt on the quality of the interviews for this maiden issue. Some interviews are taken from the webzine and from their writers.

The layout mostly 2 columns and with simple line as page frame, very basic layout for me which is not that bad considering the good printing quality. I think with such printing quality, we can expect better layout with a bit more of graphic or artwork.

The review section cover audio format and compilation complete with band's logo in alphabetical order and rated out of 10. To fill up the space, they created "Rising Demons", short bio of new bands. So there are a lot to read between the pages.

This issue comes with free CD-r compilation with 19 bands and first 50 copies will get a free copy of issue #1 Insetu's zine (review elsewhere in this site).

At the moment they have released issue #3 with all the previous issues sold out and submission and advertisement for issue #4 have been open.

I still have some copies for trade. Contact me quick before they are gone.

Sangwitok #10 (2012)

Sangwitok #10 (2012)
96pg, A5, xerox, English

Interview
Singhasari, Vinterblot, Thy Fallen Kingdom, Thirsty Blood, Tahdiyatul Arwah, Jane Dark, Crown Ov Hornd, Viniir, The Ancient War, Zuriats

Bio
Emathor, Zora, Nechbeyth, Ifrid, Hell United, Suicidal, Hellstorm

The zine keep it's 'tradition' (layout, small font size, interview style, etc) just like the previous issues (read our previous reviews. Check out our archive). It's like 'love it' or 'hate it' situation. I like this zine. The editor always got some humor in his writing which does not mix well with some metalhead (I saw bad review about this in some zine). I also like the creative way of doing the frame artwork in this issue by using only band logo and keep on repeating it around the edge of the paper. This issue supposed to be a 'Viking tribute' issue but due to lot's of 'Viking metal' bands didn't reply, so you will only have an article on Viking and some interviews. The content beside interview/reviews includes Infometal (metal news section), gig review (1 contributed by Morbid Devastator of Death Invoker), flyers, obscene comics and artworks (made by Gurathitam Art/ Raynard Stevens).

About the reviews, they are scattered everywhere in the zine but have separate section for zine review. The reviews are not rated and too long sometimes. Some interviews and bio with Malaysian and Indonesian bands are written in Malay. How about the review of previous issues? Actually, the editor starts the zine with this review, or better said, article on all his issues with the front cover (and back cover too? Or maybe some issue made with different front covers? Whatever it is, they are all good artwork!). Why is that, you might ask? Because #10 is their final issue! Sad isn't it? Well, at least for me.

And to give this final issue a 'kick in the ass' is the "Fuck Off" list; the list of bands that didn't reply the interview nicely arranged in 5 pages complete with the band's picture and logo. That is waste of effort, not just the making the interviews but also making the graphics for this list. Some of the bands are a bit 'mainstream' for me. This is probably because I read too much Terrorizer & Metal Hammer (you can check out my facebook page where I sell those used mag at cheap price).

Nothing else to add. I wish the editor have a happy life. Thanks for the contribution to the scene!
