Lust Slash Desire #1

Lust Slash Desire #1
100 pages, A4/2, Indonesian, xerox

This is not a music zine although the front cover would suggest it is one.  Only articles which the topics are around Sex. You will not find any nude pictures here except those related with the articles. And this for academic purpose.

The zine has table of content and the pages are number. One thing which is unique which I have seen before is the size. If A4 size paper, you hold in 'landscape' and fold into 2 you will have A5 size. But if A4 in 'portrait', fold into 2 you have...? What size is this? I find this size quite interesting. I might try this kind of odd size if I make a print zine in the future.

With this kind of paper layout style so will not have much space to have multiple columns. But they prove me wrong. You can still do 2 which still look nice. Overall, the layout is OK. Only if the xerox/photocopy quality to be better than this.

The content? A lot to read but the topic is not something I am interested to read further except for "Death Fetish: Sebuah Intro Pada Dunia Pervert" (Death Fetish: An Intro to the World of Pervert).

Few writers involved here but couldn't find the editors' name.

The Last pages are 'Glosarium', a Glossary of words for you that might be new to this genre.

There are some reviews on erotic books/comic but not rated.

Lucky you, I found link to download this issue a moment ago. But it doesn't have the same visual impact with the printed version since the page sequence has been edited

If you have their contact addresss, kindly drop me an email.

Morbid Noise #9 (2003)

Morbid Noise #9 (2003)
48 pg, pro-print, Indonesian

Interview
Fermento, Brodequin, Wicked Innocence, Cephalic Carnage, Spinecast, Damnable, Psychoroptic

I did mentioned somewhere in this website (or blog, whatever you want to call it) that I don't review every issue of a publication released on monthly basis. I think I can make some exception if there is something new to talk about. This time around the magazine is more 'open-minded' (no more censoring pictures that shows nudity which I didn't mention in the previous review).

There are some changes on the layout. They removed the line between the columns and reduced the font size. It looks better now especially the new font size.

I notice there is a Metal Crossword and Morbid Letter in this issue which I think you can guess what they are. No need for me to explain that here. Other 'morbid' content are similar like in the previous issue. The 'Morbid Angel' section this time features Lena Soraya Watulingas.

This issue come with free sticker & Six Feet Under poster. I don't have the CD sampler. It is mentioned in the previous issue but I'm not sure whether it was release at all since I got this from a trade. Anyway, the magazine is much more important.

At the moment, I still have these 2 issues. Interested to trade? Drop me an email.

Morbid Noise #8 (2003)

Morbid Noise #8 (2003)
48 pg, pro-print, Indonesian

Interview
Traumatism, Inhumate, Gods Of Emptiness, Pyamia, Vrykolakas, Bastard Saints, Atavism, My Self Am Hell, Mental Abberation, Dalmation Records, Gerilyawati Bawah Tanah

The first issue was released as xerox format zine in 1997. Then it became a monthly publication. That is what the ambition initially but magazine ceased to exist since 2006 (at issue #11). I got few issues from a trade. Some info that I know if not mistaken, the editor is a member of the death metal band TRAUMA, the Indonesian one ofcourse and also run a label called Morbid Noise Production. The band and the label still exist active.

The layout of the magazine is simple; 3 columns per page for the interviews but the size of the fonts are quite big. There are some obvious typo error which is hard to ignore since it is written big at top of the page. The review section have much better layout as you can see from the picture above.

About the content, every thing are 'morbid' here;
Morbid Profile (band bio. There are plenty of them here),
Morbid Classic (article on classic albums),
Morbid News (also a lot of news. As oppose to most mag/zine which put the news at front pages, they put it at the back),
articles (Music Extrim Untuk Berpola Fikir Maju),
cartoons and some advise ('Stop Terrorism', 'Stop Racism', etc). Beside Morbid News, there are also "Flash News" whereever there are empty spaces in the magazine.
The review section only covered CD format and zine only. The reviews are not arranged in alphabetical order and not rated.

There is also a section for female in underground called 'Morbid Angel'. In this issue only have one interview with a lady named Titie. I'm not being a sexist here but honestly, it is not important to have this section in the magazine.

They also give free full color poster & (bands circa mid to late 90's). It is also mentioned in the magazine from issue 9 onwards will come with a CD sampler.

The language use is understandable for a Malay like me unlike Arus Bawah. It's great to have this kind of professional magazine covering the local extreme metal scene.

There are some infos available from Morbid Noise Facebook page. Check it out the photo album:

Necrosick #2 (2000)

Necrosick #2 (2000)
50 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Soils Of Fate, Bloody Gore, Gorerotted, Unborn, Obliteration, Excarnated, Atavism, Sepsism, Pathology Stench, Encabulos, Cock And Ball Torture, Malignancy, Intense Human Rage

Dede Suhita is talented artist. Lots of sick artwork all over the zine and that is the selling point for this issue. The interviews are quite average though. It will be better if more in-depth interviews especially with Indonesian bands. Some questions need some imagination to get a good answer but some bands fail in answering them. I don’t understand why didn't they use frame artwork (since the editor is good in art!) instead of doing a basic/simple MS Word layout. There are some flyers as filler and some are not arrange nicely. Reviews available too and they are short and not rated. This is an old zine. Not sure whether the editors, Budi & Dede still making it since I couldn't find any info in the internet. However I found Dede's facebook. Contact them there if you are interested.

Ground Voice #2 (2008)

Ground Voice #2 (2008)
16 pg, A5, pro-printed, Indonesian

Interview
Suck Our Veins, Santet, Tenggorokan, Godzilla

Bio
Jerangkonk, Junkie Sleep, Sexual Sickness, Putrefaction, Bedah Otak, Pernicious, Strong Enough, Qishash, Sekarat, NT, Amatory, Alas Purwo

'Cilacap Deadly Zine' is what I have now, Issue #2 November-December 2008, courtesy of Kayangan Distro. Maybe this is a bimonthly newsletter. Quite surprise this is made in pro-print (and it was sealed in plastic wrap!) although the layout is very simple. The interviews is not really a normal interviews. Bands are asked about 'support local band' and their view on this topic. In the editorial, the editor wrote lengthily about fight against "penguasa yang merosakkan negeri kita dan pengkhianat yang merosakkan scene". A bit political there. There are some articles, some flyers and advertisement. What I found interesting is there is an advertisement from a cigarette company. I wonder whether they are sponsoring this project.

Arus Bawah #3

Arus Bawah #3
40 pg, A5, xerox, Indonesia

Interview
The Sinners, Rajam, Scream Of Agony, Rest In Peace, Sadie, Final Conflict, Mesmeric, Santet

I managed to get a copy of "The Lunatic Funzine" from a local distro, Kayangan Distro. This is 'underlicensed' copy that is this label were given the permission to copy and sell this here. And that is the lowest point for this issue that I got. All issues that I have before are in good printing quality. Again, the editors managed to combine humour into this serious music without looking stupid. Layout and everything are like other issues that I've read. All hailz to them! As usual there are lots of band bio so I have to skip writing them down. Too many! Flyers are used to fill-up space but they are neatly placed. I wonder whether they are still producing this zine. It is a waste if they stop.

Arus Bawah #5 (2008)

40 page, A5, pro-print, Indonesia

Interview
The Bolong, Siksakubur, Dead Vertical, Kubur Masal

Bio
Bumi Berputar, Teleriax, Black13, Koil, Straight On View, Core Meddle, GunxRose, One Voice, Tersanjung13, Romantical Tragis, Screwface, Fall, Ovi, My Seven Years, Indonesian Flag, The Sabotage, Day of Atonement, Rage Generation Brothers, Naked Truth, Dream Angel, Gagab Rimang, Anarchy Terror Crew, The Nonsense, Jagal, All Virgin Hated, Diabolical, Gamelanoink, Pulverizer, MAB, Killharmonic, Endless Love, Foxy Roxy, HumanxRight

Phew! I hope I didn't missed any name from the bio. Seriously, this is one of my fave zine in term of space usage. Very packed! Hope I will not have to wear spectacles after this. I missed few issues after #2. Actually this is the second issue I bought. Not much difference compare with the previous issue I read. The layout, the humour, everything is almost the same except this issue is pro-printed! Now beside the usual intie/bio @ text material, I can also enjoy watching babes in bikini hehe. Beside all that, there are few articles and a gig report "Napalm Death Tour 2007". And you will also get a free sticker with this issue.

Arus Bawah #2

32 page, A5, xerox, Indonesia, no page number, no table of content

Interview
Ritual Orchestra, Devadata, Prilayanning Jagad, Slowdeath, Brutal Torture, Belphegore, Nicronomodz

Bio
The Game Over, Suicide Family, Cremated, Tiara Lestari, Navicula, Belphegore, Malawitowong, Licked Torment, Silver Chair, The Obbelix, Deathor, Rest In Peace, Medusa, Sexual Sickness, Kubur Masal, Disphercy, Saka Qlawn, Liang Lahat, Brutality Syndrome, Diabolical, Monotheism, Death Vomit, Seek Six Sick, Emergency, Pulasara, Mizerota, People of Shit, Holygore, Injector, Banxkai Anjinx, Anus Coitus.

I'm exhausted in typing all those band names. It's a lot for a small size zine. The zine features metal and punk bands mostly from Indonesia. The font are small and everything are very well arranged not to waste any space. If there is space, they put some pictures of sexy girl (no nudity though) with funny quote, which is one of the factors I like this small xeroxed publication. Oh, forgot to tell you, their called their selves as "The Lunatic Funzine". You should know what to expect with that kind of slogan. There's a picture of NOFX saying, "if you don't give pictures along with your bio, we'll use the pictures we think appropriate" (I think. well, my translation is not that good hehe). By saying that, bio with no band picture and logo, they put picture of a girl in bikini hehe. That doesn't mean they are not serious (you can see that from their interview) but they put some funny quotes here and there which is quite hilarious. I know this concept does not blend well with some metalheads but nevertheless it is still a good read for those who are open minded. Only problem is, it is written in Indonesia language and some words I couldn't understand the meaning. There are also review on audio and movie but the reviews are too short.

Arus Bawah #2

32 ms, A5, xerox, bahasa Indonesia

Interview
Ritual Orchestra, Devadata, Prilayanning Jagad, Slowdeath, Brutal Torture, Belphegore, Nicronomodz

Bio
The Game Over, Suicide Family, Cremated, Tiara Lestari, Navicula, Belphegore, Malawitowong, Licked Torment, Silver Chair, The Obbelix, Deathor, Rest In Peace, Medusa, Sexual Sickness, Kubur Masal, Disphercy, Saka Qlawn, Liang Lahat, Brutality Syndrome, Diabolical, Monotheism, Death Vomit, Seek Six Sick, Emergency, Pulasara, Mizerota, People of Shit, Holygore, Injector, Banxkai Anjinx, Anus Coitus.

Pergh!! Banyak betul bio, tak sangka aku sanggup taip kesemuanya hehe. Menurut editor, disebabkan font kecil, semasa membaca orang terbayang bende lain (baca: 'cunt') hehe.

"The Lunatic Funzine" adalah motto zine ni. "Funzine"?

Cuma aku tak pasti tahun bila ia diterbitkan. Tu korang boleh tanya sendiri.
