Legion of Torture Issue #4 (Jan.2019)

Legion of Torture Issue #4 (Jan.2019)
24 pages, A4, English, xerox

Interviews
Black Magic Mountain Goat, Corpse Grinder, Infernal Execrator, Manzer, Disenter, Morturio, Repugnancia, Ritual, Nocturnal Vomit, Qassam, Rito Profanatorio

Ten years after the first issue, now in my hand the fourth issue released in 2019. I had this issue originally in pdf format but to have the true feeling of reading a zine, I printed it using Canon duplex laser printer. The result is excellent because the print quality is excellent. I hope the actual sales copy is good as mine hehe. The original one not too bad looking at the pictures in their website. This also explained why my copy is not hand-numbered as you can see from the front page.

The pages are numbered, no table of content but the list of bands is on the front page. This is weird because normally photos or artwork presented on the front page but instead here the editor, JC Morbid put a large zine logo and half the page with text. Not my preferred type but then logo details look cooler in this big size.

Layout-wise compared with the previous issues, this issue uses a nice clean "MS Word layout". 3 columns per page with simple page border. Since issue #3 it no longer has the 'old-school' layout style (issue #3 still have logo on the background of the page). The fonts are fukking small as the previous issue but this time I need to use my reading spectacles (and also my eye-sight not that good now haha).

No space being wasted. All utilized to the max! No complain on the layout.

And since the font size is small, this reduces the thickness of this issue. Interviews question are 18 questions or more (long ones) and the bands answered them quite lengthily too. All in all, there a lot of interesting stuff to read. Interviews might be outdated but latest update is presented after the interview ends.

However, this issue has no review or gig report. The editor explains why in the editorial section.

There's section on old Peruvian Death Metal from the 90's, a collaboration with Forgotten Chapel Zine from Poland. In here interviews with Disenter, Morturio, and Repugnancia.

I didn’t mentioned in the earlier reviews, the editor also plays in black/death/thrash band Death Invoker (vocal and guitars) and have a distro by the name Evil Spirit. Added to this is a blog called Metal Maleficarvm, where you can find latest interviews and reviews made by the editor. You can read it while they are fresh. Will take years before they featured in this printed zine.

Head on to the links below and use the contact function to get in touch. They have changed to new email address.

Painless #3 (2021)

Painless #3 (2021)
64 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Thy Dominion, Narcolepsia, Begräbnis, Putrefiance, Retch, Evil Damn, Autophagy, Paganfire, Insanity Cult, Podridao, Blasphemous Divisions, Fetid, Impure, Sartegos, Transcosmic Blasphemizer, Grafvitnir, Arkhon, Verthebral, Kurnugia, Professus Abominari, Spectrum Mortis, Caligula, Katari

After 7 years from the last release, now in my hand the 3rd issue.

Front cover and the editorial looks 'primitive' and old school but starts from page 3 onwards turns to normal magazine kind of layout. 2 or 3 columns per page.

This is pro-printed so no complain at all on the layout. The pages on the content is not really white background. It has this 'photocopy stained' like using old photocopy machine. It doesn't look 'clean' which I think the editor a bit creative on this.

Interviews are in-depth. Editor lots of knowledge on the bands and this can be seen in the questions.

The bands are mainly from Latin American scene, and these are featured in the language I can understand. Maybe these interviews were translated from Spanish/Portuguese to English for this issue. The answers are very long, and these are in small font size. Very good reading here. Fetid interview has 1-line empty space it between the paragraphs. Looks weird though.

Reviews are on tapes and CD (alphabetically arrange and not rated). They are scattered throughout the zine. Zine review is there too.

Some bands mentioned Sabaoth repeatedly. A cult name it seems. Remembered some local distro selling their demo in the 90's.

It comes with huge poster SURRENDER OR DIVINITY, as a tribute to Avaejee.

Sadogoat Perversion #2

Sadogoat Perversion #2
44 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interviews
Graveyard, Holder, Almighty Sathanas, Ritualization, Necrofagore, Insaner, Solbaid/Cannibalistic, Queiron, Unaus.. Kulten, Unborn, Putrid Gore Art, Blacker

Bio
Troops of Terror, Death Invoker

2 years after its debut issue, the editor, Manuel and his team of writers managed to release another issue of Sadogoat. In this issue, they are using lot of different type of fonts which look a bit messy. Some page the put frame artwork so a bit unconsistent in term of layout. One thing I like the most the editor put a lot of gore, satanic artwork here and there. The pages are numbered and no table of content.

In the review section, the editor uses the smallest font size I ever seen (or maybe I've seen before but can't remember any zine name at the moment). There are lots of reviews and they are not rated and not alphabetically arranged but separated by format.

They created a section called "Exhumations From The Catacomb" which is review of old demo, etc (yes, I know you guess it right). One stuff I found interesting is about 'Witching Hour' compilation tape 1992 from Singapore.

In conclusion, there's vast improvement compared with #1 and naturally all zine are mostly like that. And as usual, the review is up when the zine is probably sold out. Good luck in finding this.

Angelcorpse special report '20 years of Exterminate'

My experience with this zine is with the first four issues. My last issue was with issue #4, still half size zine back then in 2010. I remember the zine is pro-printed with great chats with mostly death metal bands.

Now expanded to full A4 size makes it look even better. Ricardo, helped by contributor/collaborator; Mauricio, Eduardo and other crew with various contribution have come with another great issue.

The front cover is simple, just like the previous issues I had (1 to 4). Nothing fancy. But the content is something else. The printing for this issue is awesome, in black hard cover with silver ink printing.

It doesn't start with editorial, after the content page will straight to interviews. The layout is in 3 or 4 columns per page with small size fonts the way I like it. So, there are many to read in these 72 pages.

No table of content in this thick fucker though. I thought the last page is, but it turns out on that the words below the big skull is Crypts of Eternity's releases (by the way, CoE is also a label).

The interviews are quite fresh at the time of release; from 2018 to 2020 so topics involving Covid-19 is also asked to the bands/label and how this is affecting them. The interviews with Julio Viterbo and Dario Derna are very informative, covering all their projects.

There is a section entitled "The New Blood From The Uku Pacha", like bands review covering their releases with short info on Peruvians bands; Hell Trepanner, Arkhon, Antropomancia.

After this continues with music reviews (7"). The reviews are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

There is also "Copenhagen Death Metal Assault", reviews on Death metal releases by Danish bands made in nice cut n paste layout.

This issue is made in glue bind type (not sure the professional term for this). I have bad experience last time from some other publication. Had to flip the pages carefully to prevent the pages from falling off. Print run is 500 copies. Might still be available. I bought this from local distro, Distributions of Death.

Other things to take note, the Angelcorpse special tribute supposed to commemorate 20 years of Exterminate but on the year of this zine being published it is already 22 years old.

Exanimatvm couldn't be interviewed for some reason but the drummer was brought in to provide their analysis on Exanimatvm's album, 'Dispersae Et Tormentvm' track by track.

I also like Tunjum's interview which they talked about Moche culture. That's very enlightening.

I end this review with a quote from Anastasis of NWR; "We've come to a point that 3rd rate albums of yesteryears are now considered jewels...". I dont know why I pick this out. Maybe sick of looking people selling 'old stuff' at high price and people are actually buying it. Better buy zines!

Legion Of Torture #3 (2011)

Legion Of Torture #3 (2011)

32pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Abhorrot, Caligula, Sartegos, Necrofagore, Demonic Cremator, Paganfire, Disinter, Croix Mortis, Evil Spectrum

The third issue of this Peruvian zine. Legion of Torture maintained the same size that they started from issue #2 (A4) and also the 'thickness' but don't be fooled with the amount of page (32 page only) because there are lot to read. Yes, small font size but not to the extent of torturing your normal eyes like Rites of Zygadena #1 ;-)

Lesser bands for this issue and no "Ladies of the Underground" too since only Demonic Cremator replied for this issue. Interviews lengths are varied, some maybe just 16 questions and some have 30 questions.

Reviews are very long which one of the thing I like in this zine. The reviews are separated by format and it covers both audio & zine. The reviews are numbered with number 105 as the last review. There are also 'last minute review' which uses band logo and I like this layout a lot. The reviews are not rated.

There are local gig report and a long report of Infernal Curse S.E.A. tour in Manila contributed by In Death We Thrash 'zine.

Overall, there is improvement on the layout because I don't like 1 column per page like in issue #2 because the text will too long in 1 line. Now with mostly 2 to 4 columns per page, there are OK. There are logos or artworks on the background and some with frame/page border. No TOC and page are numbered.

I have few copies for trade and all copies are hand-numbered. Contact me if interested or contact the editor. Check out the past reviews for the contact address.

Now it is 2013, more than 2 years have passed by. Maybe a new issue might be around the corner? I’m looking forward for the next one!

Crypt of Eternity #4 (2010)

Crypt of Eternity #4 (2010)

96 pg, half-size, pro-printed, English

Interview
Imprecation, Vasaeleth, Father Befouled, Grave Miasma, Deteriot, Cruciamentum, Anatomia, Necrovarous, Stench Of Decay, Coffin Text, Shub Niggurath, Infinitum Obscure, Ominous Crucifix, Nocturnal Vomit, Demonic Rage, Disma, Cardiac Arrest, Decrepitaph

Bio
Astur, Inside Hatred

The fourth issue of this ungodly death metal zine. They maintain the same layout and the style like the previous issues. No complain at all on the content. It's double the madness in #4 (very thick issue!!). Just another excellent issue I would say. Only a small dissatisfaction because the interviews and the answers are not clearly differentiated, it looks like a very long question. But after a while you'll get use to it. I hope I can see some Malaysian band here in the near future.

Reviews cover CD, demo and vinyl (not rated but alphabetically arranged) and all done by Ricardo (the editor) and the writers; Victor Miranda & Xabier Sanchez.

The zine ended with an outro that includes some recommendation of other good zine for us to check. I list them out here because I will use this posting to check out them out soon: Noise and Shit, Putrescence, Necrosis, Revelations From The Abyss, Satanic Malediction, Painless, Revelations of Doom (S.America), and Chants of The Atomic Genocide. And these zine also listed but I already know but just in case you want to know: Bestial Noise, Call To The Infernal Horde, Black Plague666, Prayer Book, Deadly Illness, Eternal Fire, Temple Of Adoration and The Sinister Flame.

Later I got contacted by Andres Rhor of Cobra (layout artist for this zine) and traded some stuff. Cool!!

From one of the interview, I now know people now are trading zine in pdf. This is new for me. Never thought we can do this. Please don't ask me. I don't have time to scan every pages of the zine. Or maybe I should before I trade the zine? Argh! I'll teach my kid to use the scanner then.

The new issue already out (and sold out from the editor) and now searching for mailorder that have a copy of issue #5.

Legion Of Torture #1 (2009)

Legion Of Torture #1 (2009)
40 pg, A5, xerox, English

Interview
Infernal Conjuration, Evil Damn, Pathogen, Lantern, Recrucify, Necrofucker

Bio
Incisor, Bastardator, Non Serviam, Goat Tyrant, Afflictis Lentare

I'm reading this zine backward. I mean I started with issue #2 (latest issue) first. I noticed the changes of size from A5 to A4 for the new issue which a good. I also noticed the editor, JC, already made his own trademark since the debut issue, that 'rrroooarrrgggg' word without the 'h' at the end of the word, which he keep on writing on every interviews and some reviews. Different name used for some column such as "Necronometal" for the zine review. Reviews are not rated. No page number and no table of content. Small fonts, 1 column per page, simple hand-drawn frame art. Spaces are very well used so again the size of this zine will be more than 40 if made the normal way. Some pages are full of flyers. Good questions being asked, considering this is a debut issue. The xerox quality is just OK. The best of this issue is the review of the first Iron Maiden concert in Peru. I really like the reviews which describe the atmosphere of the gig, etc beside the usual report on band's performance on stage. JC even interviewed the first person to enter the venue. Now I know, you have to be fit if you want to enter such big concert if you want to get a good spot. You need to run for it! Although only 6 questions asked but they are very long one. Mine hand-numbered #66/80.

Legion Of Torture #2 (2010)

Legion Of Torture #2 (2010)
32 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Non Serviam, Insacred, Bestial Rape, Goat Tyrant, R.I.P, Demoniac Slaughter, *Demona, *Morbid Tales Zine, Warlock Voice, Slaughter Messiah, Persecutor, Anarkhon, *Circle Of Destruction Zine

Looks like a thin zine but to due reduced font size (at a readable size ofcourse) and no space waste with nicely done computer layout, there are a lot to read in this 'Nearer The Death' Chapter. Probably double the size if using the normal size font. There are also cut n paste style but not in a chaotic arrangement. The zine is mostly in 2 or 3 columns per page while gig report is one straight line (very long line since the font is small which I don’t really like this style). Postage is the reason for making this issue as thin as they can but at the same time also giving a lot of stuff to read. It took quite some time to finish reading this issue. Good xerox quality. Full version of Slaughter Messiah will be a good read. The pages are numbered but no table of content.  On the last page the are some info on zines. The editor is also good in 'playing' with words. You can see that from the title of every column. "Live Torture" is gig reports section. Some 6 gigs being reviewed with good to read stories happening during the event. And also the reviews, "Die By Legion Of Torture" (audio review), "Metal Meleficarum (The Scrolls Of Torture & Death)" (zine review). These reviews are not in alphabetical order and not rated. There's also "Tortures From Old East", a reviews of old Eastern Europe metal by Holger Fleck from Germany. If you wondering what are those asterisk marks on the interviews above, they are from a section called "Ladies of The Underground". No need for me to elaborate that because I know what that means. The zine might be costly to order I think. Mine hand-numbered 29/100. By the time of this review, I still have few copies for trade. Contact me if interested. The rest you can contact JC, the editor.

Sadogoat Perversion #1 (2009)

Sadogoat Perversion #1 (2009)
64 pg, A4, xerox (pro-print cover), English

Interview
Blasphemophager, Cult of Daath, Mandatory, Morbosidad, God Macabre, Claustrophobia, Nocturnal Grave, Funebrarum, sanotorio, Almighty Emperor, Bestial Atrocity, As Sahar, Sadomator, Goatpenis, Morbid Goat Fornicator, Necrosadist, Body Hurting Art, Dodenkrocht, Blacker, Satanic Rites, Decayed, Tyrant's Blood, Tumult, Necroholocaust

Bio
Insultor, Unborn, Demoniac Slaughter

There are a lot of bands cramped in just 64 pages. No page number and no table of content. Questions are average, mostly 10 - 14 average questions. Earlier part of this zine is quite boring but gradually, the next interviews are getting better and better. So I assume the first interviews on the zine are his earlier work which is still lacking certain factor. Some interviews are contributed by Michael & Estupro. They made a special section for 'Ross Bay Cult' and this section feature Tyrant's Blood, Tumult, Necroholocaust. Xerox quality are good but some pictures is too dark. About the layout, Manuel use normal computer columns but with good frame artwork. Thanks goodness they use frame artwork which is good to look at since interview are not that interesting. There are some audio reviews. This is debut issue and I think the future can be a good issue. He knows where his weakest points are. Last check on his myspace few minutes before I upload this shows no new issues have been release.

Crypts Of Eternity #3 (2009)

Crypts Of Eternity #3 (2009)
48 page, A5, pro-print, English

Interview
Intrust, Fenebrarum, Voids of Vomit, Blaspherion, Godless, Graveyard, Ignivomous, Gorephobia, Drowned, Necrovation, Godless Rising, Hatespawn, Unaussprechlichen Kulten, Impetous Rage

Bio
Putrid, Profaner

This issue keeps the format of issue #2 including the size. So it is slightly bigger than A5. They still use the same font type used since issue #1. More pages of death added and this will surely pleased those underground death metal maniacs. With more pages now, I think it is wise to have a table of content although now (at the time doing this review) I think TOC is not really important although it can make the publication look organized and professional.

They requested not to call this zine "old school death metal zine". Clearly that tagline limiting the coverage of the zine and they preferred to be called as only "death metal zine". And yes, the zine and the band interviewed are true pure death metal because they despise Kratornas and Mantak (both are black metal bands by the way, if you still dont know). Really great to read those honest comment.

Review section (in alphabetical order and not rated) covers vinyl, CD and DVD as well as some demo (some are available for sale, do ask them). More reviews this time though. Ricardo also have added new "staff", Victor L. Miranda of Putrescense Records. The reviews with initial VM is him.

There are also gig report on the centerfold. 3 pages, very lenghty review and tiring my eyes reading them.

Seriously, not much I can say. Another well done issue!

Crypts Of Eternity #2 (2008)

32 pages, A5, pro-printed, English

Interview
Drawn And Quartered, Embalmed Souls, Karnarium, Necrocultus, Cianide, Slugathor, Dead Congregation, Bloody Sign, Unconsecrated, Sargatanas

Bio
Voids Of Vomit, Invidious, Hatespawn

This issue is twice bigger than their debut issue and also the size is slightly bigger than A5 (but not sure what to write so I wrote A5). Some feedback they got after announcing in issue 1 that the zine is for death metal is some fucker accusing them as "closed minded". Hahaha. That are some of thing they wrote in the editorial (which is longer this time). Beside that they inform the zine will be released twice a year. Well, I don't mind buying them as long as the content is interesting. It still maintain the layout format like issue 1, the fonts, the columns style. There are some news but perhaps just to fill up space. There is a page on DISTORTED HARMONY RECORDS, sort a tribute page with the front cover of the releases (they release now consider kult 7" like Carcass Live '91 and Thou Shalt Suffer, among the few). Again, this issue is also recommended!!

Crypts Of Eternity #1

16 pages, A5, pro, English

Interview
Headhunter DC, Mortem, Repugnant, Kaamos

Bio
Unaussprechlichten Kulten, Backyard Mortuary

I got this issue by trade with Api Fanzine editor and he warned me about the size of this zine. But after reading a good review in Voices of The Darkside I don't hesitate and agree to have the zine. And yes, I'm not dissappointed although it is 16 pages thick but made profesionally printed. Even with the small amount of page, they put table of content. The zine starts with a short editorial, describing the purpose of the zine. If you read the name of the band's interviewed, you know they are into death metal and they are really DM maniac! The interviews are well made and very in depth and really interesting to read. They really know their stuff. The layout is clean, two column per page and got frame (not artwork frame), using unconventional font type (not New Times Roman, etc). The font type is okay, its readable but when used in all capital letter, I get some hardtime in understanding it (for example that band's name Unaussprech.. i hope it got it right). The reviews are separated to several parts (Demo, vinyl, Cd, etc) but the reviews are rather short and no rating. Well, you finish this zine in no time and once you do, you badly want their next issue. Fortunately for me, I got 2 issues in 1 shot haha. For you, support this "small" underground jewel.
