Legion of Torture Issue #4 (Jan.2019)

Legion of Torture Issue #4 (Jan.2019)
24 pages, A4, English, xerox

Interviews
Black Magic Mountain Goat, Corpse Grinder, Infernal Execrator, Manzer, Disenter, Morturio, Repugnancia, Ritual, Nocturnal Vomit, Qassam, Rito Profanatorio

Ten years after the first issue, now in my hand the fourth issue released in 2019. I had this issue originally in pdf format but to have the true feeling of reading a zine, I printed it using Canon duplex laser printer. The result is excellent because the print quality is excellent. I hope the actual sales copy is good as mine hehe. The original one not too bad looking at the pictures in their website. This also explained why my copy is not hand-numbered as you can see from the front page.

The pages are numbered, no table of content but the list of bands is on the front page. This is weird because normally photos or artwork presented on the front page but instead here the editor, JC Morbid put a large zine logo and half the page with text. Not my preferred type but then logo details look cooler in this big size.

Layout-wise compared with the previous issues, this issue uses a nice clean "MS Word layout". 3 columns per page with simple page border. Since issue #3 it no longer has the 'old-school' layout style (issue #3 still have logo on the background of the page). The fonts are fukking small as the previous issue but this time I need to use my reading spectacles (and also my eye-sight not that good now haha).

No space being wasted. All utilized to the max! No complain on the layout.

And since the font size is small, this reduces the thickness of this issue. Interviews question are 18 questions or more (long ones) and the bands answered them quite lengthily too. All in all, there a lot of interesting stuff to read. Interviews might be outdated but latest update is presented after the interview ends.

However, this issue has no review or gig report. The editor explains why in the editorial section.

There's section on old Peruvian Death Metal from the 90's, a collaboration with Forgotten Chapel Zine from Poland. In here interviews with Disenter, Morturio, and Repugnancia.

I didn’t mentioned in the earlier reviews, the editor also plays in black/death/thrash band Death Invoker (vocal and guitars) and have a distro by the name Evil Spirit. Added to this is a blog called Metal Maleficarvm, where you can find latest interviews and reviews made by the editor. You can read it while they are fresh. Will take years before they featured in this printed zine.

Head on to the links below and use the contact function to get in touch. They have changed to new email address.

Legion Of Torture #3 (2011)

Legion Of Torture #3 (2011)

32pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Abhorrot, Caligula, Sartegos, Necrofagore, Demonic Cremator, Paganfire, Disinter, Croix Mortis, Evil Spectrum

The third issue of this Peruvian zine. Legion of Torture maintained the same size that they started from issue #2 (A4) and also the 'thickness' but don't be fooled with the amount of page (32 page only) because there are lot to read. Yes, small font size but not to the extent of torturing your normal eyes like Rites of Zygadena #1 ;-)

Lesser bands for this issue and no "Ladies of the Underground" too since only Demonic Cremator replied for this issue. Interviews lengths are varied, some maybe just 16 questions and some have 30 questions.

Reviews are very long which one of the thing I like in this zine. The reviews are separated by format and it covers both audio & zine. The reviews are numbered with number 105 as the last review. There are also 'last minute review' which uses band logo and I like this layout a lot. The reviews are not rated.

There are local gig report and a long report of Infernal Curse S.E.A. tour in Manila contributed by In Death We Thrash 'zine.

Overall, there is improvement on the layout because I don't like 1 column per page like in issue #2 because the text will too long in 1 line. Now with mostly 2 to 4 columns per page, there are OK. There are logos or artworks on the background and some with frame/page border. No TOC and page are numbered.

I have few copies for trade and all copies are hand-numbered. Contact me if interested or contact the editor. Check out the past reviews for the contact address.

Now it is 2013, more than 2 years have passed by. Maybe a new issue might be around the corner? I’m looking forward for the next one!

Legion Of Torture #1 (2009)

Legion Of Torture #1 (2009)
40 pg, A5, xerox, English

Interview
Infernal Conjuration, Evil Damn, Pathogen, Lantern, Recrucify, Necrofucker

Bio
Incisor, Bastardator, Non Serviam, Goat Tyrant, Afflictis Lentare

I'm reading this zine backward. I mean I started with issue #2 (latest issue) first. I noticed the changes of size from A5 to A4 for the new issue which a good. I also noticed the editor, JC, already made his own trademark since the debut issue, that 'rrroooarrrgggg' word without the 'h' at the end of the word, which he keep on writing on every interviews and some reviews. Different name used for some column such as "Necronometal" for the zine review. Reviews are not rated. No page number and no table of content. Small fonts, 1 column per page, simple hand-drawn frame art. Spaces are very well used so again the size of this zine will be more than 40 if made the normal way. Some pages are full of flyers. Good questions being asked, considering this is a debut issue. The xerox quality is just OK. The best of this issue is the review of the first Iron Maiden concert in Peru. I really like the reviews which describe the atmosphere of the gig, etc beside the usual report on band's performance on stage. JC even interviewed the first person to enter the venue. Now I know, you have to be fit if you want to enter such big concert if you want to get a good spot. You need to run for it! Although only 6 questions asked but they are very long one. Mine hand-numbered #66/80.

Legion Of Torture #2 (2010)

Legion Of Torture #2 (2010)
32 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Non Serviam, Insacred, Bestial Rape, Goat Tyrant, R.I.P, Demoniac Slaughter, *Demona, *Morbid Tales Zine, Warlock Voice, Slaughter Messiah, Persecutor, Anarkhon, *Circle Of Destruction Zine

Looks like a thin zine but to due reduced font size (at a readable size ofcourse) and no space waste with nicely done computer layout, there are a lot to read in this 'Nearer The Death' Chapter. Probably double the size if using the normal size font. There are also cut n paste style but not in a chaotic arrangement. The zine is mostly in 2 or 3 columns per page while gig report is one straight line (very long line since the font is small which I don’t really like this style). Postage is the reason for making this issue as thin as they can but at the same time also giving a lot of stuff to read. It took quite some time to finish reading this issue. Good xerox quality. Full version of Slaughter Messiah will be a good read. The pages are numbered but no table of content.  On the last page the are some info on zines. The editor is also good in 'playing' with words. You can see that from the title of every column. "Live Torture" is gig reports section. Some 6 gigs being reviewed with good to read stories happening during the event. And also the reviews, "Die By Legion Of Torture" (audio review), "Metal Meleficarum (The Scrolls Of Torture & Death)" (zine review). These reviews are not in alphabetical order and not rated. There's also "Tortures From Old East", a reviews of old Eastern Europe metal by Holger Fleck from Germany. If you wondering what are those asterisk marks on the interviews above, they are from a section called "Ladies of The Underground". No need for me to elaborate that because I know what that means. The zine might be costly to order I think. Mine hand-numbered 29/100. By the time of this review, I still have few copies for trade. Contact me if interested. The rest you can contact JC, the editor.
