Metal Storm #3 (Aug. 2008)

Metal Storm #3 (Aug. 2008)
92 pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Ares Kingdom, Nocturnal Graves, Desaster, Witchmaster, Pentacle, Infernal Majesty, Old, Midnight

The third issue follows what you can see from issue #2. Cut n paste style. Lots of pictures used and these pictures are related with what being said in the interview just like #2. There are pictures of metal head buying #2. Good job again by Hellthrasher!

And the same goes to the content. The interviews are very long, 30+ questions being asked (that's lots of research made on the bands). 14 pages on Pentacle alone.

And the gig report is interesting as usual too. This time a comprehensive day by day report of Wacken and Party San. Massive 22 pages!

Album reviews are rated. More stuffs now and in the same style. The editor already said "no point in reviewing useless shit", so dont expect too many reviews. Some reviews are in 1 full page (normal desktop layout, not cut n paste which mean the review is very long). Also added now demo reviews in cut n paste style. These are not rated but includes duration of the demo playtime. Whether it is tape or CD-R format, not clearly mention in the reviews though.

Other than these, there is "Hell Metal Artillery" section which is address and logo of labels which is quite cool to look at. And lastly hand-written notes in inside back cover by Hellthrasher.

I have no other info about this great zine except for some from their website saying issue #4 was out in 2010. I missed out this issue.

Snakepit #18 (2008)

Snakepit #18 (2008)
112 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interview
Savage Grave, D.D.T., Kraken, H-Bomb, Artilerry, Sydney Product, Frigid Bitch, TNT, Juggernaut, Znowhite, Cyclone Temple, Charter, Chris Cronk, Hirax, Skullview, Fischel's Beast, Wehrmacht, Steel Assassin, Decapitator, Necropolis, Wargod, Morsure

My second issue, which I bought together with issue #17 from a local distro. Please bring more zines for sale!

Nothing much to add on the layout or the interview and other content of this magazine. If you like what you read and what you see in #17, you will definitely like this one.

I have to agree with some people. This magazine is the magazine for the 80's. I hope all those seasoned metalheads bring out all the knowledge of the past and get them documented like what this magazine do before your life ends for the benefit of the scene and younger metalhead like me.

I think this is the time looking at the advertisement of Malaysia release in big magazine like this. It is Vulga - Mayhem With Mercy LP by Deathrash Armageddon. Yes, I know Deathrash is from Japan but somehow I am proud seeing Vulga in here.

The past issues are now reprinted with 7"EP. Now is your chance to get it before they are sold out again. You know where to get this.

Snakepit #17 (2008)

Snakepit #17 (2008)
112 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interview
Exciter, Beehler, Sortilege, Backwater, Assassin, Ruthless, Leviathan, Fatal Violence, Death (with Erik Meade), Burner, Trial, Commander, Bat Attack, Devastation, Overkill, Mayhem (US), Evil, Enforcer, Hammeron, Rainforest, Slayer (SA), Riot, Karion

My first Snakepit. Been reading a lot of good words on this publication and now able to witness it myself. The editor  Laurent Ramadier and other writers such as Frank Stover, Eddy Vermeiren (Bel) and Malcolm MacMillan (UK) sure have lot of knowledge on the bands.

The layouts are very simple 3 columns per page. Pictures are very small too, sized just enough to fit in 1 column. There is table of content and the bands are arranged in alphabetical order, not by sequence of appearance in the magazine. Not much praised can be made on the layout. Very dull I must say.

However if you look at the interview, they are very in-depth. The questions are quite detailed and very long. They cover anything music-related regarding the bands and its member. Sometimes answered by 2 or more band members and all of the answers are very detail and long too. Patience needed because not much graphic here just pure text madness which can put you to sleep. Reading the interview, it is amazing to find out that some 'bad blood' still prevails after 20 years or more. Whatever happens back then surely left a big and deep 'scar' in some people heart. The interviews often ended with discography at the end of the interview.

The reviews are rated out of 10 with 10 is the highest (Hirax EP got 10). The reviews covers audio/music formats and they are clearly identified and grouped together (Album & EP, Re-release and Demos).

If not mistaken this is printed by NWN and also comes with a 7"EP. I think its true looking at the quality of the printing, etc.

Exh Goetie #1 (2008)

Exh Goetie #1 (2008)
8pg, A5, xerox, English/French

I hope the artwork portray what it supposed to portray because I think the goat's face looks funny.

This is a newsletter, made in cut n paste layout style. Consist of info on the releases of Exh Goetie and their mailorder list and it also presented some reviews of their releases taken from other zine. The is also a gig report in French. Very rare to see this kind of publication these day.

I sent an email asking for their latest distro list (I got their distro flyers before I got this newsletter) but they didn't reply. I don't remember who sent this newsletter but thanks for giving me one.

Demented Omen Of Masochism #2 (2008)

Demented Omen Of Masochism #2 (2008)
46pg, A4, xerox, English/Polish

Interview
Enforcer, Deceased, Sadomator, Voids Of Vomit, Kratornas, Sanguis Imperem, Black Witchery, Mandatory, Kingdom, Ironfist, Resurrection, Pyoveli, Riotor, Necroscope Zine, Rot, Pseudogod, Persecutor, Leichengott

I bought together with #3 but the xerox quality is not as good as #3. Unlike #3, this issue have page number and table of content. Layout is still in the great cut n paste style. Texts are all in the same font type (typewriter font). In #3, couple of font types are used. Live reports are written in Polish, just like issue #3. In addition to that the reviews (music & zine) are also in Polish, arranged in alphabetical order and not rated. Interviews are OK. The one with Adam of Necroscope is the highlight. Massive 40 questions! That's crazy amount of questions. I think Skalpel's wife don't approve his metal activities. Me too! My copy hand-numbered #171.

Domain #4 (2008)

Domain #4 (2008)
72 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Weapon, Witchhammer/Infernal Demon, Sabbat, Sickness666, Abigail, Eternal Oath, Legion of Death, Infernal Execrator, Ironfist, Hayagriva

This issue is entitled as "The Witches Rune" already sold out long time ago. A friend of mine gave this photocopied copy. Not really a good copy as you can see from the pictures above. Some parts can't be seen clearly. It was not stapled too so I had to write the page number to avoid myself getting confuse. Anyway, I'm sure the actual copy is better than this. Very good cover & frame artwork by Sickness666, as always. No page number but have table of content. Here you will have some interesting interviews and very a long one with Sabbat that includes their discography and the front covers! Syaiful normally puts discography after the interview ends. And you can also see Hayagriva without corpse-paint, cute! There are 'caption' on the pictures so it’s nice (and funny!) to read them. On the layout, as usual he use frame art and with 2 columns per page for the interview while on the review page is made in cut n paste style.

Reviews are not rated and not in alphabetical order. Some have picture of the bands instead of putting front cover or band's logo. The reviews are separated to different section; "Past, Present...Forever" (vinyl?), "Face of Darkness" (demo), "Alliance to The Powerthrone" (album/CD). Too many Desaster, eh? Here's another column, an article called "Infernal Voices", an article on a cannible from Japan, with some 'eye-candy' there. Last but not least, a gig review (Sabbat in Singapore). The next 2 issues will be special issues so bands & labels are discouraged to send promo. We now know #5 is Desaster Tribute issue and #6 is out already without any review section.

The original copy is hand-numbered 165/300 and thanks again for giving me a copy of this.

Antichrist #6 (2008)

Antichrist #6 (2008)
36 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Alastor, Bestial Raids, Dimentianon, Draco Hypnalis, Empheris, Hate, Moder, Nunslaughter, Old Temple Records, Rigor Sardonicus, Sathanas, Slaughter Brute

This is their first English issue. Congratulations! Neat computerised layout with background graphic and it is very fortunate that the xerox quality is excellent! If not, it will make the text hard to read. Also comes with CD sampler but I didnt get mine since I got this by trade from some local metalhead so can't comment on songs selection. Nothing much to say about this issue. The review section cover all formats (music section) and that consumed 10 pages of this zine but very few review in "Paper Artillery" (zine review). Aleksandr Moksymov did all the work (also run Deadshop distro and Dead Center Productions) while Faustina666 is responsible for the interview with Rigor Sardonicus. With 36 page, it looks like a thin zine but the font are small so there will be more to read. I have their newer issues and they have improved a lot and become a pro-magazine.

Metal Zone Newsorder #1 (2008)

Metal Zone Newsorder #1 (2008)
32 page, A5, xerox, Malay

Interview
In Torment, Ceased War, Samatary, Akhnakh

Bio
Kundinar, Raizhobium, Gagak Bulan, Incarcerate, Reynagade, Ensemble Of Silence, Hereafter, Necroagony, Oprich, Al-Azazil, Gorgon, Traitor, Ceremonial Casting, Niang, Obsolete, Cafergot

I believe this "newsorder" is a newsletter given free to any Metal Zone Distro customer. It's not a professionally design newsletter but look more like a 'old' zine with good frame/border artwork. This small publication has page number and table, with front cover artwork made by Zizi Amri. There is only one interview made by MZD (with Stone of Silent Death. Stone was in drug rehab at that time) while the rest are made by Askwhatra of Al-Zannakh zine. They also have a section called "Metal Zone News" which I mistaken it as Metal Zone news (news concerning the label) but it turn out to be the usual metal news. The effort of making mini posters of Godless Rising and Braindead is great but the xerox quality is not good enough, so that mini posters will be a waste. No in-depth discussion in the interviews. They are short and are mainly to promote the bands. Some reviews (CD, CDR, tape and zine) and gig report available also some flyers pasted here and there, as well as a section of Metal Zone distribution list. It would be great if they can continue producing this kind of publication of course not because it’s free but because of the content.

My first “bootleg zine” review. This is actually a xerox copy of the zine. I don’t know how the actual zine looks, whether its pro-printed or photocopy. There are few zine which I don’t have the chance to buy it so I ask some metal head to xerox the zine for me. Firstly, besides being my reference in case in the future I buy their newer issue so I have something to compare with. At first I thought I will only put these review in my paper issue only (if there's one later) but then I think why not put some info here. So please don’t judge the picture of the zine because the actual zine will look better.

Nekroperverter & Evil Krusher made an excellent debut (picture of them available here). About the layout, it's a killer cut n paste style! Using 'old-English' font for the text and on some pages they used frame artwork. The pages are numbered and provided table of content. Reviews covered zine in the section called "Evil Scripts" and also audio stuff (demo, LP, EP & compilation) creatively named as "Demonstrations of the Dark" which are rated 1 to 5 with the highest point 666.

English are understandable. Good interviews are presented here and have also some live reports.

Mine copied copy are hand-numbered #032/200. I hope I can get a 'true' copy of this zine and also hope they can release more issues.

Vampir #14 (2008)
72 page, half size, pro-print, English

Interview
Death Heaven, Witchtrap, Dimentianon, Black Sister, Anima Damnata, Strike Master, Embryotomy / Formless Terror, Farscape, Bestial Holocaust

In the previous issue, Darko mention about expecting a baby. In this issue you can see the picture of the baby girl, making sign of the devil! This issue starts with foreword by Hellavenger of Communion (Chile) and editor's call for boycott to webzine & mp3. Right after this it continued with "Vinly Empire". The text is hard to read including some of the reviews but in "Vinly Empire" is even harder due to the font type used. About the interviews, it is just another great chat like #13. Physically and the layout is like #13 (2 or 3 columns per page), page numbered but not table of content. Some changes would be introduction on the before the interviews. Beside reviews, there are some gig reports in the middle of the zine. In "Rip off Alert", the scam in Davao, Philippines have been unearthed but I think by now all should have known about this. Some people like me already become a victim. Just like other editor, Darko also have this "boycott webzine" attitude. Mee too! But the writing does send a chill to my nerve. I'm also a webzine. Probably I'm among the few who writes review of paper zine. Anyway a new issue already out in 2010.

Tsunami of Malaysian Metal Scene (written by Ed of Sangwitok Zine)

A great small size zine. A very long editorial too! It's already the 13th issue, as I expected the content is not the thing I should be worry about. Well-done! Good chat but too many smiley (some people don’t like looking at happy face). No introduction like most zine does before the interview. It will start straight to the interviews. The negative point if the printing quality, looks like the printer is running out of toner. Reviews cover audio ("Vinyl Empire" for vinly & "Album reviews") and also "Written in Blood" (zine review). Hereafter did get a 'nice' review here. I think this is the first place where I read about the rip off and picture of that bastard. One of the original sections is "Metal Diary". It’s about life diary of a metalhead. This issue feature Jerasak of Witchhammer Prod & Carlos of Rawblackcult and they will talk about what they do from waking up from sleep in the morning till they back to bed at night. Interesting idea!

Goatcult Perversion #1 (2008)

Goatcult Perversion #1 (2008)
52 page, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Almighty Emperor, Archaic Argot, Ars Macabra, Benatnash, Bestial Atrocity, Blood Division, Camos, Decayed, Denouncement Pyre, Evilwar, Goatpenis, Impetigo, Impetus Malignum, Infernal, Megaera, Morbosidad, Necroholocaust, Necrosexual Rites, Pagan Rites, Profanatica, Sadomator, Satanic Rites, Sodomizer, Teratism, The True Endless, Tenebrion, Vultur

A pro-printed zine from Germany and my copy is hand-numbered 270/500. Marco (editor) is assisted with some contributors such as Manuel (Sadogoat Perversion Zine) and Martin Lazarte (Explosion Cerebral Zine) for the interviews and Melanie Wenserowski for the artwork. He used frame artwork, layout using 2 columns per page but some are 3 columns which is quite chaotic for me reading them. Interviews are short and the questions are the 'easy' type except for Martin where on some interviews the questions are a bit more interesting. Impetigo is long eventhough just 1 sentence being asked. Respect this old-timer every time he answering interviews.

I already read Sadogoat Perversion Zine. The interview featured here can also be found in Manuel's own zine. I think not many people have the chance like I did (having both Goatcult Perversion #1 and Sadogoat Perversion #1). So I dont think it’s a problem having same interview in different zines. This issue is dedicated to I.Niger (ex-Murder Rape) which committed suicide by shooting his head. Issue 2 already out (which I have bought) and the 3rd and final issue might be out now.

'Cilacap Deadly Zine' is what I have now, Issue #2 November-December 2008, courtesy of Kayangan Distro. Maybe this is a bimonthly newsletter. Quite surprise this is made in pro-print (and it was sealed in plastic wrap!) although the layout is very simple. The interviews is not really a normal interviews. Bands are asked about 'support local band' and their view on this topic. In the editorial, the editor wrote lengthily about fight against "penguasa yang merosakkan negeri kita dan pengkhianat yang merosakkan scene". A bit political there. There are some articles, some flyers and advertisement. What I found interesting is there is an advertisement from a cigarette company. I wonder whether they are sponsoring this project.

Chaos #14 (2008)

Chaos #14 (2008)
80pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Asphyx, The Black Dahlia Murder, Evocation, Profundi, This Ending, Gorefest, Detonation, Demonical/Centinex, Deathvokation, Suffocation, Lay Down Rotten, Nominon, Haemorrhage, Death Breath, Eroded, Dead Congregation

I already sold my copy of #13 and now I couldn't find a distro that have a copy to sell. Instead of waiting further (I think its nice to review stuff in chronological order), let just go to the next issue that I have. As I already told you, #13 is my first issue of this great magazine. Believe, when you read #12 and look at #13, there are huge improvement in the layout department. If I remember it right, the text of Amon Amarth interview are designed/layout that it will look like a Viking ship.

It took 2 years for #14 (entitled "Beyond The Grave") to be be released and the result is not disappointing at all. Really heavy stuff here, a lot to be read. Issue #14 still continue the same style of its previous issue. The layout is computerized but not the usual kind of layout. And to have the text on black background is of course, great for me.

I read some review about the newer issues of Chaos regarding the layout which is too unconventional (you have to flip the magazine on some interviews) but that is not a big problem for me. I think its creative and certainly not 'chaotic' as some might said.

The 'reading material' is interesting as always. Not much to comment here. Interviews are nicely done and really in-depth sometimes. The reviews also follow the same style which is separated to its genre and yes, "Hail to Sweden" is also available.

One changes that I noticed is Joe Black (the editor), change the name of this 'song-guessing game' (like Terrorizer's "Hard of Hearing", a song is being played and people guess from which album/band the song is from) from Goteborg Deathmix to Stockholm Deathmix. I think you can guess, this time the game focus more on bands from Stockholm. The 'celebrities' involved are from Dismember, Unleashed, Grave & Entombed.

And not to forget, a free CD sampler although I think this is not important.

Probably the last copies might be available for sale.

Meridian 9 #2 (2008)

Meridian 9 #2 (2008)
48, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Dagor Dagorath, Argharus, Deafest, Guthrum, Godslave, Vedonist, Nepente, Caricature

While checking myspace, clicking some band's friend's list to another, I stumbled upon this 'zine's myspace and got attracted by the front cover. So I bought 2 old issues.

Start with the editorial page, you can see pictures of the editor and the writers. The zine consist of G. Owen Wears, Chase Ambler, Heather Smith & Karina Lyn Pulec and with some short info on them. Yes, they have female writers and they will get a different view on certain thing.

Looks like professional magazine; neat layout (simple layout, the same 2 column per page throughout the whole zine) page numbered, have table of content, letters from readers section (interesting to read although the reply is not as fun as (old) Nordic Vision and SOD.)

Interviews are interesting read. Quite surprise to know Deafest is a one man band by Chase Ambler which also writes in this zine.

Review only cover "disc", as said in the introduction. No format mention so I assumed they are all CD. The reviews are arranged in alphabetical order and rated.

Not to forget, there are some concert review. When I said earlier, "female writers...different view", I was referring to some of the concert report. While usually writer wrote about the bands performing on stage, here they wrote their experience they encountered in the gig which quite hillarious for me reading it.

There is a section named "Opinion & Such", which is an article section. This issue, they wrote about "The Death of Optimism" and "Grief of The Soul".

Only one thing, I tried to figure out is the 'motto' of the zine. "A Metal Zine of an Unusual Nature", says the zine. I don't really see anything unusual here. Probably "Opinion & Such" because I normally see punk/HC zine wrote article while metal zine stick strictly to music.

Beside the zine, you'll get a CDR sampler (with the bands featured in the zine) and also a free sticker.

Burning Churches #5 (2008)
28 pg, A4, xerox, English

InterviewAbigor, Crucified Mortals, Terror Squad, Envenom, Sael, Maniak, Ululate, Sodomizer, Dark Mystery, Fastkill

Another issue in the same year? That's fast! Again same layout, interview style, etc, etc. "Love it or hate it", some people might say that. Font size reduced so you can read even more reviews now. Only audio & dvd though, no zine.

Burning Churches #4 (2008)

Burning Churches #4 (2008)
32 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Kamphar, Nuit Noire, Barbatos, The Meads of Asphodel, Rotting Christ, Church Bizarre, Asmodee, Chainsaw, Balmog, Wrust

Seigneur release another issue after 2 years gap. Not much have changed, looks almost exactly like #3. The layout is the same and so does the questions.

They have this 'tradition' by putting contact address and discography at the end of interview but I wonder why they are not doing it for Wrust (from Botswana!).

More review this time but no zine review. I think the way he made the back cover (with logo of the bands interviewed) is quite cool. Ofcourse the concept used for every front cover of this zine is much much better (sorry, some I have to censored a bit. I dont want to violate Blogger rules).

Nordic Vision #1-2008 (2008)

Nordic Vision #1-2008 (2008)
80 page, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Craft, Amok, Beastcraft, Strange Dolls (Beth Robinson), Leviathan, Enslaved, Kill, Tyrant syndicate, Aura Noir, Xploding Plastix, Satyricon, SunnO)))

Actually the size slightly bigger than A4. Anyway, this issue came out after 8 years since the last issue released. We certainly think that the editor quit the scene or stay "low profile". But they are back now.

For the old readers of this mag, you will surely be surprised with this new issue. Nordic Vision have changed (evolve?) to something different, that looks "un-metal" on the layout department. Also look at the front cover, Frost is smiling (normally metal would look fierce or macho on photoshoot haha).

This time, gone all the fancy looking layout which we usually see in a music magazine. What you can see here layout that looks like a journal, very clean and normal looking (or boring to some). Picture here will normally take a one full page and I thinks this is kind of good and original too.
Even the editor is using different name now (real name, I assume).

Old follower of this mag might be dissappointed. No more "Soundcheck" and "Sex and Satan" (honestly, "Sex and Satan" is not important at all but its just nice to look at the boobs).

There's an article entitle "Headhunting in the Nineties", complete with interview with a (real human) headcollector.

About reviews in this mag, if I count it right only 3 stuff being reviewed (how can people count it wrong?)

Despite the changes, I'm looking forward for the next issue. Its the content that really matters. Take a look at the cover story, Satyricon. It is very long and interesting chat and the same goes for the rest of the bands and people interviewed here.

And ofcourse, 80 pages printed on thick paper which mean this is a heavy mag and will cost some extra money for a copy due to the postage.

Short, Fast + Loud #20 (2008)

Short, Fast + Loud #20 (2008)
88 pages, full size, pro-printed, English

Interview
Mind Of Asian, Flag of Democracy, ANS

I got hooked up with this mag because the local distro selling it says this is thrash zine. Only later after ordering the zine I got to know mag covers mostly 'non-commercial' hardcore/punk/grind.

Layout are OK but I dont like this kind of 'newspaper' printing. It will make your hands dirty after you finish reading.

The features of this zine:
Section "Gimme 5" where in this issue they asked 5 "toughest punks who could kick most ass",
12 page section called "Column", features articles of various topics and

there are reviews that cover noise stuff, demo (named as "Mosh of Ass"), other audio stuff (EP, CD, etc). Although its punk/hc zine, you see some BM stuff reviewed and some BM stuff being advertised here.

And after all that sections, come the interviews. Not the typical sequence you would normally see because most zine/mag put the reviews after the interviews.

But only 3 interviews? Is the interviews very long and indepth? Not really because Mind of Asian interviews are very short but that could be language problem.

Beside the reviews, other thing that make this zine 88-pages thick is the 20 page of advertisement. There's good and bad of this (lots of pages on ads). I think its good to see all those flyer and front cover artwork in pro-print but if you ordered this zine from outside USA, the postage price will be a problem at least for poor people like me haha.

This zine is released by Six Weeks Records. You can check out the cool stuffs released by this label beside info on past and present issue of this zine.

Burning Abyss #6 (2008)

Burning Abyss #6 (2008)
56 page, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Underdark, Mandatory, Bloodwritten, Panzerfaust Zine, Apocalyptic Visions, Throneum, Dead Congregation, Death Breath, Nomad, Manticore, Vulcano, Inseminator, Repossession, Afgrund

I saw the flyers for this issue. The urge to buy this zine growing bigger day by day. Fortunately some copies are available from Domain Zine distro and bought a copy. A very good issue in terms of presentation & and the content. Layout is very professional made by Wisdemon (wisdemon@o2.pl), not a single page have white background. Add that with the good content, then you have a great zine! Logo created by Szpajdel.

Maciek (the editor) is assisted by some writers (Hydrant, and also Sascha of Germany's Mandatory). As said by the Maciek, #6 is using different format and language. I'm guessing the previous issues is a xerox/photocopied-type of zine and is written in Polish. A wise change I must say. Maciek's english is much better than me and certainly not in the "kamikaze english" style hehe.

Most bands featured here are Polish bands (either the interviews or the reviews) which is great for us to discover and learn more on Polish metal scene.

Some columns which I think a regular feature in this zine: "News from the Abyss" (news section, ofcourse), "Reviews from the Abyss" (Audio reviews in alphabetical order, separated to two parts. Second part for stuff start with the letter M), "Burning Classics" (review for late 80's to mid 90's stuff) and "Burn Metal Press" (zine review)

My copy is hand numbered 399/500 but I think already sold-out by now.
