Paul Caravasi got a very large crew and illustrators. Lots of artwork inside this issue. Really thick and heavy issue.

The pages is not numbered and no table of content. Just normal computer layout but uses page border/frame artwork with cool drawings.

Music reviews are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

There is also 2 pages long movie reviews and these are rated but some shorter ones is not rated. There are couple of comics and couple of pages of 'Soulgrinder fans'. There are pictures of them wearing the zine t-shirt or holding the zine.

Extreme Metal #2 (2013)

Extreme Metal #2 (2013)
52 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interview
Terdor, Killgasm, Festerguts, Autopsy, Cursed Scroll, Gokbori, Sacramentum, Nordafrost

Article
Thergothon
Wormwood, Time Travel Paradox

Troy did a good job with this issue. The front cover artwork is awesome and so does inside the front & back cover. The layout is Old-school cut n paste style. Lots of poster or pictures of bands in the early 90's/80's. As you can see, with small font size there are a lot to read. No complain here! Except for few pages suffer pixelation problem. Some are hard to read though.

Some flyers are put here and there to fill up space. The pages are not numbered and no table of content, but these are secondary as long as the content is interesting to read.

Before you get to real content of the zine you will see couple of pages of news. Actually, there are more pages with kind of this news/bio/review thing throughout the zine with logo and the cover artwork. Quite an effort being put here. And also, the article title are drawn like a logo. Very nice!

Zine review are compiled in 1 section, but music reviews are everywhere in the zine. Reviews are not rated.

Beside this there are lots of short article on bands. It can be biography, review or news but accompanied by the bands logo/cover.

The logo was made by Christophe Szpajdel but not his typical style. I mostly seen his black metal logo not so much in death metal style like this one.

Chips N Beer #8

Chips & Beer #8
132 pg, A4, Pro-Printed, English

Interview
Wayne Kramer, Phil Rudd, Gerry Lopez, Dead Congregation, Ripper, John Christ, Alan Howarth, Impetigo

A newsprint magazine. 2 columns per page with background image.

Beside the usual interviews, reviews on music and zine, there are also articles on Chinese Monsters, Hong Kong horror movies reviews, War Movies review, the section called "I Remember Halloween" and some other articles like "Highway to Hell", or types of knife. What I want say to is, there are lots to read here. There are lots of artworks and movie posters too.

A bit about the music/zine reviews (4 pages if I count it right), they are rated but not sure which are the best. The legend says "Pvt. Pyle, Tofu, Pretzel, Chips & Beer, Bourbon, Flying Jelly Donut Titties". So which is the best?

I think the 'theme' for this issue is 'war', so the articles on type of knife, War Movies reviews fits nicely.

Metal Rules! #12

Metal Rules! #12
100pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interview
Forbidden, Death Angel, Illdisposed, IronFire, One4One, Steve Howe, Sadus, Slayer, Destruction, Waterdown, Jerry Boys

Another old magazine from the past. This is "Where Underground Meets The Playground". The editor, Jeff Rappaport added humour in his writings. Some questions are funny. So this style might be appealing to some metalhead but I like it. You can find picture of him many times in the magazine.

There is a long gig report of "Thrash of The Titans". Lots of band bands played here. Quite lot of pages on this and includes photos.

On the last page is "Mail Call". Its a fan mail column. The reviews are on music only. They are alphabetically arranged and not rated.

The contact addresses below might not valid anymore. The url refers to some German metal website.

Metal Storm #3 (Aug. 2008)

Metal Storm #3 (Aug. 2008)
92 pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Ares Kingdom, Nocturnal Graves, Desaster, Witchmaster, Pentacle, Infernal Majesty, Old, Midnight

The third issue follows what you can see from issue #2. Cut n paste style. Lots of pictures used and these pictures are related with what being said in the interview just like #2. There are pictures of metal head buying #2. Good job again by Hellthrasher!

And the same goes to the content. The interviews are very long, 30+ questions being asked (that's lots of research made on the bands). 14 pages on Pentacle alone.

And the gig report is interesting as usual too. This time a comprehensive day by day report of Wacken and Party San. Massive 22 pages!

Album reviews are rated. More stuffs now and in the same style. The editor already said "no point in reviewing useless shit", so dont expect too many reviews. Some reviews are in 1 full page (normal desktop layout, not cut n paste which mean the review is very long). Also added now demo reviews in cut n paste style. These are not rated but includes duration of the demo playtime. Whether it is tape or CD-R format, not clearly mention in the reviews though.

Other than these, there is "Hell Metal Artillery" section which is address and logo of labels which is quite cool to look at. And lastly hand-written notes in inside back cover by Hellthrasher.

I have no other info about this great zine except for some from their website saying issue #4 was out in 2010. I missed out this issue.

Hellfrost #5 (1998)

Hellfrost #5 (1998)
48 pg, Letter, pro-print, English

Interview
Absu, Anal Cunt, Arckanum, Deceased, Fleshgrind, Hypocrisy, Morbid Angel, Necrophobic, Sadus, Suffocation, Wumpscut

A zine from 1998 in newsprint format. The paper have aged, looks yellowish. So now I know, must avoid this paper type. Later I found written in the zine "a collectors edition (high grade paper) in 666 copies and with sticker". You can actually choose which format to buy.

The pages are numbered, have table of content. 3 columns per page. 1 full page for editorial. The picture quality is not good and anticipated this in this newsprint format.

The reviews rated, separated by genre. The scale used is between 0 to 100 with ofcourse 100 being the best. The title of the stuff reviewed used different font types probably to suit with the genre of the stuff. Only music stufs being review here including demo.

There are "Metal To The Core" (label's list and addresses), "Metal On The Internet" (list of websites) and list of releases in 1998.

Ultra Violent #9

Ultra Violent #9
60pg, 21cm x 26.7cm, pro-printed, English

Interview
Uwe Boll, Chuck Parello, Dennison Ramalho, Ben Tatar, John Wintergate, Meir Zarchi

Articles
The Abandon, Compound Pictures, Forced Entry, Independent Roll Call (on indie film) and Remembering Roger Watkins

This is a magazine that I bought many years ago. Horror & Exploitation Cinema magazine, as they call it. At that time, I kind of have motto for this blog "for publication promoting the forces of darkness" which featuring any publication that can be seen as absurd, dark, taboo, abnormal from Malay culture perspective but that topic is too broad for me to focus. Then I smaller the scope to fanzine and later to just metal zine/magazine. Since I already have this magazine and I like it too so I put it here.

Firstly, it's quite a surprise to see it on sale in the local bookstore. I hope the local authority can relax a bit their rule on censorship (or maybe they let it on sale by mistake).

Scott Gabbey and team made a good work here with the content. Interviews with horror movie director from cult movie like Boarding House or I Spit On Your Grave. Most of the topic discussed are the same topic you can read in a metal zine. Some gore arts, naked photos from the movies being discussed or reviewed.

The reviews section is of course focus on movies (in alphabetical order but not rated) but surprisingly there are some black metal CDs being review in the music CD section.

The layout however need some improvement. I am so used with professional magazine with fancy layout. What you can see here is normal 2 columns per page and 3 columns for review.

Eclectic Arts #2 (2011)

Eclectic Arts #2 (2011)
44pg, letter, pro-printed, English

Interview
Clandestine Blaze, Dawn Desiree, Negative Existence, Warblood, Blodsgard

The second issue of this environmental friendly zine, bought from Negative Existence. I wanted to check the "progress" of the zine. The layout, etc are almost all like #1. Mentioned here #2 was released after few weeks after #1.

Mark Sugiyama likes black metal a lot and also explore other non-music stuff in this zine. You will find non-musician also being featured here. And that includes sculptor, painter, etc. You already know if you read #1. However there is no articles on craft breweries. Pretty sure in #1, the editor mentioned the zine is dedicated to this. Maybe continue again in #3 perhaps?

Looking at close-up photo of the face at the size of A4 paper looks a bit scary (referring to Dawn Desiree interview).

Beside interviews there are some articles, section on local scene and some short review in similar style like #1.

A quick googling, I found a blog made by the editor. He mentioned about doing another issue but can't find (read: I am too lazy to browse) the latest issue available.

Eclectic Arts #1 (Apr. 2011)

Eclectic Arts #1 (Apr. 2011)
48pg, letter, laser xerox, English

Interview
Maniac Butcher, Black Tape For A Blue Girl, Satanic Warmaster, Vienna Teng (www.viennateng.com)

It is mention in the zine that this zine is printed with recycled paper. Well, this might be my first zine printed with recycled materials. My first 'green' zine I would say.

The zine is dedicated to musician, artist and craft breweries. Again, my first zine covering such topics in one publication.

That's explain the weird selection of bands. You have BM and non-metal in an issue. Maniac Butcher?! The editor mentioned he's fan of the bands.  Questions are interesting. He do have inside-out knowledge of the bands. Since he is also a musician, some questions are related with music-composing and music business/industry.

There are articles on craft brewery and one article entitled "Last Call", about being a female black metal fan by Asti Spumante. Maybe it is applicable for US scene. Euro scene is different as what I was told.

The music reviews are simple and short. Not rated, not alphabetically arranged. Asti wrote some reviews too, the longer ones.

Lastly, about the layout. The layout is too simple. Just 1 column (or no column, if that you want to call it). Has table of content but the pages are not numbered. Some page have background pictures.

Stated here #3 is in progress although #2 not yet printed. That's how productive they are.

Metal Storm #2 (2007)

Metal Storm #2 (2007)
101 pg, full size, pro-printed, English

Interview
Destruction, Witchtrap, Avenger Of Blood, Nocturnal, At War, Trench Hell, Bestial warlust, Infinitum Obscure

Editor of Api zine text me about some zine he's going to order and I chipped in for some issues of Metal Storm and Snakepit. The zine is slightly larger than A4 and damn heavy.

I couldn't find the contact address of this great zine except email. Quite surprise to see some hand-written message on the last page. Not sure if the editor a.k.a Hellthrasher do this in all 250 copies.

The zine have table of content, the pages are numbered. The layout is in cut n paste style with lots of cool pictures on the background.

The article on Lost Angeles thrash metal, the editor used the alphabet from band logo for the text of the article. Example, the letter P is taken from P from Possessed Logo. Total of 10 pages on this article and with lots of picture. I like this a lot.

The editor put lots of pictures on the gig report. The gig reports are among the best one I've read. It tells about the journey to the venue, the crowd, the bands and the setlist and short interviews of the fans attending the gig. There are also pictures of metalheads buying issue #1.

The reviews are rated out of 10. There are only 4 reviews but they are the lengthiest review I ever seen. Some review are of small font size and 2 pages long.

My copy hand-numbered #214.

Snakepit #18 (2008)

Snakepit #18 (2008)
112 pg, A4, pro-printed, English

Interview
Savage Grave, D.D.T., Kraken, H-Bomb, Artilerry, Sydney Product, Frigid Bitch, TNT, Juggernaut, Znowhite, Cyclone Temple, Charter, Chris Cronk, Hirax, Skullview, Fischel's Beast, Wehrmacht, Steel Assassin, Decapitator, Necropolis, Wargod, Morsure

My second issue, which I bought together with issue #17 from a local distro. Please bring more zines for sale!

Nothing much to add on the layout or the interview and other content of this magazine. If you like what you read and what you see in #17, you will definitely like this one.

I have to agree with some people. This magazine is the magazine for the 80's. I hope all those seasoned metalheads bring out all the knowledge of the past and get them documented like what this magazine do before your life ends for the benefit of the scene and younger metalhead like me.

I think this is the time looking at the advertisement of Malaysia release in big magazine like this. It is Vulga - Mayhem With Mercy LP by Deathrash Armageddon. Yes, I know Deathrash is from Japan but somehow I am proud seeing Vulga in here.

The past issues are now reprinted with 7"EP. Now is your chance to get it before they are sold out again. You know where to get this.

Anvil #4 (2004)

Anvil #4 (2004)
84 pg, pro-print, English

Interview
The Amentia, 3 Inches of Blood, Dead To Fall, Slayer, Atrocity, Entombed, Malevolent Creation, Nocturnal, Phazm, Pig Destroyer, Razorbacks Records, Polterchrist, Vader

This is the final issue that I got. Suddenly I remembered there is another Magazine called DOA which also 'formerly known as SOD Magazine" which I haven't own yet. Hopefully I can get some (used) copies like Anvil. Email me if you want to get rid of your DOA.

Anvil #3 (2004)

Anvil #3 (2004)
84 pg, pro-print, English

Interview
Mayhem, Satyricon, Infinite Hate, Dismember, Death Angel, Krieg, Exodus, Suffocation, Vicious, Acheron

Krieg answer the longest and the most entertaining interview for this issue. I spotted one changes in this issue: the review of latest release is placed right after the band's interview. Everything else is just like the previous issue (layout, etc).

Cool to know a Christian radio invited Acheron, Deicide (as mentioned by Vincent) and debate about religion in their show. Wondering there are any foul, vulgar words or swearing involved in the show.

Anvil #2 (2004)

Anvil #2 (2004)
84 pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Probot, Dimmu Borgir, Cannible Corpse, Devil Driver, Deicide, Ravenous, E-Force, Horned God, Killaman, Macabre, Necrodeath, Serial Butcher

I bought second-hand copies of issue #2, #3 and #4 from a Sabahan metal head in facebook. The front cover is too cool for not to be featured in here.

The official website link is no longer valid. Beside knowing this magazine is formerly known (or made by the same people) as Sound Of Death magazine or better known as S.O.D Magazine but still curious to know why creating a new one.

Anyway, the layout, the style of interview and reviews are just like SOD Magazine except (if I remember it right) this magazine is in color. The reviews are rated with skull, David Horn still starts his questions with "Tell me...", wickedly priced at $6.66 and ofcourse comes with free CD. There is a full page Konqueror Records advertisement here. I wonder whether this is Singaporean label still exist.

Not much to say about this "The Unholy Bible of Extreme Metal" really if you are familiar with SOD Mag. The interviews differ from each contributor. This magazine do looks great with lots of blood red pages like that Ravenous picture but I think need a bit of creativity in layout.

The next reviews will be a lot shorter since I don’t see any obvious changes from each issue.

Autoeroticasphyxium #16 (Feb. 2010)

Autoeroticasphyxium #16 (Feb. 2010)
76 pg, letter xerox, English

Interview
Beltane, Eros Fire, H-George, Psychic Times International, Brutal Ballet Company, Reverend John Hex, Crome Molly, Twisted Hillbilly Records, Jesse "Savage" Kahler, Lushmontana, Minty Pineapple Productions, Reborn From Ashes Zine, The Starship, Rosemary Stovokor, Winston Blakely

This zine featuring not just metal bands but there are also poet, performer, artist or probably other personality which I don’t know how to classify them. I remembered having an issue of Autoeroticasphyxium many years ago and I think the layout is still in the same style.

2 column per page no page number and and table of content. There is no band logo before the interview, just normal text on top of the page. The zine lack of pictures which make this zine look a bit dull. You have to be patience in reading them. Good xerox quality by the way.

The content is good. There is a lot of interesting chat. The people interviewed gave very long answer.

They also featured some cartoon, artwork, articles, short stories and poem. The reviews are not rated, arranged in alphabetical order and they covers audio, zine, books and DVD.

I got motivated every time when reading interview with zine editor but then when the sunrises the next day, I still am lazy. My posting in this blog alone are getting lesser now.

One interesting fact I got from reading this zine which make me wondering, can you ballet dancing to metal music? I need to find the video on youtube. How about oriental belly dancing to metal music?

Latest check before this posting is up; the official web no longer works.

Updates 2019: I have updated the new web links. Thanks Dave for the info.
