Laudatio Funebris #1 (2007)

Laudatio Funebris #1 (2007)
44 pg, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Belenos, Nachtfalke, Woodtemple, Make A Change...Kill Yourself, Sombre Forest, Melencolia Estatica, Abyssic Hate, Rimfrost, Tumulum, Mind Propaganda, Cryfemal, Dornenreich, Bilskirnir, My Shameful, Quasar, Tyranny, Imindain, Skepticism, Ataraxie/Funeralium, Reclusiam, Mournful Congregation, Senthil, Why Angels Fall

Article
Bubonic Plague

This is old stuff. I watermarked it with my old logo and kept as draft for many years.

Layouts are great, the pages are numbered and have table of content, very professional magazine-like style. The use of graphic in black & white is good (pictures of forest, old castle, church, graveyard). The text overlapping on black picture is not cool though fortunately there are not many.

"Black and Doom Metal Underground Zine", as they said it. Featuring BM, heathen pagan oriented or depressive BM bands. The editor, DM manage to craft essential & interesting questions in the short series of interviews. This able to generate good answer from. One page only consumed one page on small font size. The longest is with Bilskirnir. Only 3 lines of questions and answered in like 30 lines (almost 4 pages).

No reviews though. Also need to mention here Mournful Congregation and Dornenreich taken from Serpente webzine.

Beside this, and article on Bubonic Plague that happen in Western world hundreds year ago there is also.

A Section on dark folk underground titled "Forest of Folk" featuring short bio and discography of Seven Pines, Wolfsblood, and Sonnehagal.

Laudatio Funebris is an interesting zine mainly because of the concept of the zine because not many that I know of focussing this kind of genre.

Released by Bubonic Prod in 500 copies. Their weblink no longer work though. Some distros like Herege Warfare or Schattenmanns still have this.

Metal Storm #2 (2007)

Metal Storm #2 (2007)
101 pg, full size, pro-printed, English

Interview
Destruction, Witchtrap, Avenger Of Blood, Nocturnal, At War, Trench Hell, Bestial warlust, Infinitum Obscure

Editor of Api zine text me about some zine he's going to order and I chipped in for some issues of Metal Storm and Snakepit. The zine is slightly larger than A4 and damn heavy.

I couldn't find the contact address of this great zine except email. Quite surprise to see some hand-written message on the last page. Not sure if the editor a.k.a Hellthrasher do this in all 250 copies.

The zine have table of content, the pages are numbered. The layout is in cut n paste style with lots of cool pictures on the background.

The article on Lost Angeles thrash metal, the editor used the alphabet from band logo for the text of the article. Example, the letter P is taken from P from Possessed Logo. Total of 10 pages on this article and with lots of picture. I like this a lot.

The editor put lots of pictures on the gig report. The gig reports are among the best one I've read. It tells about the journey to the venue, the crowd, the bands and the setlist and short interviews of the fans attending the gig. There are also pictures of metalheads buying issue #1.

The reviews are rated out of 10. There are only 4 reviews but they are the lengthiest review I ever seen. Some review are of small font size and 2 pages long.

My copy hand-numbered #214.

Abysmal Scripture #6 (Sep.2007)

Abysmal Scripture #6 (Sep.2007)
30pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Heptameron, Swamp, Confinement, Medieval, Sempiternus, Kampf Records, Farasu, Hellish/Empheris, Merciless Crucifixion, The Wreckage

Scene Report
Cuba

The final issue from Abysmal Scripture bundle sale. Not sure whether Al Fahmi release anymore issue after this. The zine delivers you all the content with the type of layout you already familiar with. The major improvement is now the zine is printed/xerox using laser printer. The pictures are crsytal clear!

There is a Rip Off list that I thought made by the editor but after reading further it is made by Nonoy of Paganfire.

To see a another issue will be great. DO let me know if you know #7 is on sale in any distro.

Grrrl:Rebel #5 (2007)

Grrrl:Rebel #5 (2007)
66 page, A5, xerox, English

Interview
Girl Germs, Plush, Lick It Good, Oddity, BBBomb

As usual there are plenty of articles. Some column like "Words For Mind Empowerment" have few articles in it featuring articles made by Niesa (Mass Separation), Natalie (Suspicious Stains), Ika (Peniti Pink Distro), Rahel (Anti-Frat), Dodo (Wolverette Zine) & Kylie. There are band pictures between the articles. At first I thought editor themselves are the one who wrote the articles. Other articles in this issue: Behind The Veils & The Teary Eyes, Babymakers From The Land of The Imbeciles, Be Part of Grrrly Rebellion. Also not to forget (which I forgot to mention in #4) is about "Queen of Noize". They still continue doing this column. Here is already part #5. Other content Grrrl scene report from Turkey, also have some info on Ebonsight (all female black metal band. I got their flyers somewhere in 1990's), "photo album" of Singapore Grrrl bands circa 1992 till present, "Classified", "Humour Me", "I Hate Mail" and of course music & zine reviews. I noticed they made this nice text-box with some band info called "Grrrl Star" which I didn’t see in the previous issues but only featured 2 bands (Stronza, Foamy ED), probably this is just to fill up space. Another good read is Q&A section, featuring some skinhead bands where they are asked same set of questions. This issue continues the format they introduced in #4. The font size is smaller now and I think it looks better this way. So thumbs up again for this zine.

Nobullshit #8 (2007)

Nobullshit #8 (2007)
26 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Deathless Anguish, Georgian Skull, Wasted Land, Nihilistic Holocaust, Distorted, Dead Jesus, Inside Artzine, Grieving Age, Beltane

I got this zine by trade. Later I know this zine is also available for free by downloading the file from their web. Now I'm guessing I got the fucked-up version (wrongly printed) of this zine. I mean the page arrangement is not in order (double sided print) and the front cover is the same with the back cover (which is not the case in the download version). This is already the 8th issue. Usually at this stage, editors should have matured and improved. That is the case here so we will some interesting interviews. The zine starts with reviews (music stuff, zine, video and book) before we can read the interviews. I found that putting the band's address at the beginning of the review is original, never seen that kind of format before. Layout 2 columns per page, neat looking, the pages are numbered but no table of content and some pages have background art. There are also some article which is quite a lot for a metal zine (Religion & Metal, What the Fuck, In The Desert Hell Part 2, Squat the World, A Witch Bibliography, What Do We get in return in Making Zine?, Am I A Potential Killer?, What's wrong with MP3?, How to make a Homebrew alcohol, Nothing to Write A Scene Report About?, Victim Of The System). The one on homebrew alcohol is cool which come with diagram. They also add their "diary" or experience in Saudi Arabia. The editors are Filipino but working in Saudi Arabia at the time of zine is made. They managed to get some Saudi Arabia bands here. They already released a new issue in 2011 which also available as free download. Check out their web!

Shrunken & Mummified #9 (2007)

Shrunken and Mummified #9 (2007)
40 page, A4, pro-print, English

Interview
Eternal Bleeding, Elerion Miroku, Underdark, Ravendark's Monarchal Canticle, Moonfog, Murk Exorbitance, Deathvokation, Obscene Gesture, Marblebog, Diskord, Stygian Shadows, Kill Your Faith, Frostmoon Eclipse, Iron Batasuna

Scene Report
Lebanon, France

This is my first ever Hungarian zine and a good one too. No space is being waste. Small fonts and neatly arranged layout. I like this kind of computer layout because its looks simple but nice. No TOC but the page are numbered. Lots of reviews and it includes the front art as well arrange in alphabetical order and rated. Again, another 'interview' with Christian Felipe from Peru, the biggest rip off. I read this self-answered interview somewhere before. About the review section, they named the section for CD and fanzine review but the title art was too "abstract" for me to figure what they say except for demo section which is called "Demolisher" and vinyl (Inches to Inches, Blast to Blast). There is one long review in Hungarian fortunately on the "last breath reviews", there's the English version (much longer after translation). Mine is hand-numbered #208. Years have passed; probably a new issue(s) may be released after 2007.

Dark Legend #2 (2007)

Dark Legend #2 (2007)
100 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Vivianne Crowley, Maxine sanders, Draegon Undomiel, Mayhem, Olivia Durdin Robertson, Doreen Valiente, Burzum, Explicit, Equinox

Article
The Good Old Hard Rock Sungai Segget Days, Dark Legend Arts Promotion, A Tribute and Salutation to Barchiel of As-Sahar, Tribute to Euronymous, The Church of Satan, Mastic@ and The Christians Evil

Looking at my journal, this is one of my earliest reviews that I made in 2008 and very long one too. Because it is too long, I skip it and choose to write on newer zine. I also dont like reading my own handwriting haha. Now I pity my school teachers, having to read my awful handwriting. Only now I had the strength to read and type them here.

This is not the usual reading like other metal zine. First, you see weird names in the interview list, right? They are not from any bands but personal from various groups practising wicca, occultism, witchcraft and paganism. Secondly, Reymond (the editor) wrote or elaborate certain thing in the between the interview so you will know some info about the issue discussed and also you know there are so much hatred towards Mastika (more about this later).

One of the highlight for me are the letters Reymond to Euronymous (before his death ofcourse!) which is presented there although he compiled it in form or "question & answer" like a normal interview. He also elaborate Euronymous's view on satanism which is quite enlightening. Equinox is not interview but Darkness letter to Reymond. Another highlight is the Burzum interview with Varg when he was in jail. There are some questions that are not answered by Varg, I wonder why?

Layout-wise, ok for the interview (2 column perpage) but the review using 4 columns that is too near with each other make it looks weird. Talking about review, some review are only like 5 lines. Very short but have logo of the band for every review.

Other stuff in this issue: a page each for "Images of Norwegian Black Metal" and "Images of Northern Darkness" (pictures of bands with corpse paint), some funny cartoon, promoting some artwork made by him or other artist (with explanation about the artwork), compilation of questions from other zine and with the answer by Reymond.

If not mistaken, I read in a zine in late 1990's, Reymond said DL will be released only in 5 issues. Like a pentagram that have 5 points. I forgot other details of that interview. If calculate, first issue in 1997, second issue in 2007, the fifth issue will be in 2037. I will be 60 years old haha. Anyway, this is just a humour. Dont take in seriuosly. The 10 year gap is caused by, none other than the "black metal issue"! I dont want to go in detail about that but read on some interesting 'stories' related with this editor.

Mastika (a local magazine) accussed Reymond is starting a branch of Church of Satan in Malaysia, under the teaching from Euronymous and have thousands of followers in Malaysia. Can you believe that? Well, the folks here believe that. Together with writings from Harian Metro (a local tabloid newspaper, said to be the largest Malay-written newspaper), that fuels up the anti-metal movement in Malaysia. I was shocked to see Reymond picture in that magazine (I dont buy Mastika but used to read the sex stories at the newsstand while waiting for my bus). They blurred the face like he's a rapist or some criminal but I've seen that picture before. After that police starts interrogating him. There's a lot of info about this in this zine.

And throughout this issue, you will read his own view and also as protest to media, government in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia on how they treated metal community.

If you noticed, the back cover is a blank paper. Actually behind it is an artwork by Reymond which quite provoking.

The editor also run a label and involved in some bands.

Thrash Attack #3 (2007)

52 pages, A5, xerox

Interview
Evil Army, Strike Master, Witchburner, Executioner, Deathhammer, Bloodquest, Antacid

Gig Review
Motörhead in Munich, Fuck X-mas

The format is the same like other issue. The improvement for this issue is the font size, its better look like this. Starting from this issue, there's a news section but a very small one like half of page only. I forgot to mention this in issue #2, the zine small in size but have page number and table of content. One of the interesting part is the mailorder guide. 2 pages of info on good mailorder distro. Some featured here are Nuclear War Now!, Hell's Headbanger Records and Witchhammer. I'm not sure whether this going to a regular feature or not. It is not in issue #4.

Hellthrashing #2 (2007)

12 pages, A4, pro-print

Interview
Devastation, Selvageria, Hateful Agony, Tyrants Blood, Filli Nigrantium Infernalium

For this issue only left Carlos managing the newsletter. The content have increased and he said issue 3 might be a full magazine. Great! Another kult cut n paste madness! The answer for the last Cuntest is the song Public Suicide by DBC (from Dead Brain Cells LP). That's an obscure release! Sexy and nude pictures are a bonus for me. You dont see that in issue 1. Although the interviews and reviews (nearly 70 reviews of audio stuff and zine) are serious, you can get some humour in between the pages. "I am so true!! I dont use email" are some of the hillarious quotes you can find here. The first 25 copies of this newsletter will get "Pussy Worshipper Warrior" button. Arghh! My copy is #142!!

Blessing Moment #6 (2007)

40 pages, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Symbiosis, Nortt, Graven, Expulser, Darkregime, Endstille, Otesanek, Audet, Neochrome, Summoning, Stalaggh, Acheron, Keep Of Kalessin, Balberith, Barbalans, Deimos, Akitsa, Pagan Hellfire, Kafan, Feneral Dusk, Obscurus Advocam

Article
Sick, Blasphemous, Tasteless: The Cover Art of 2006

This issue offered "obscure, unknown yet never been explored bands", said by its editor Xxxul. You have to agree with that statement unless you are diehard supporter of underground raw black metal because some bands I only knew them from this zine only. An OK xerox quality but when comes to article section, written by Todd De Palma, some of the cover artwork is not clear enough to see the details. Good computerized layout but no page number and table of content. This is zine long sold-out. Made in 100 copies only and hand-numbered (mine numbered 8). You can contact the editor and can also ask about his BM band, NEFTARAKA which have produced some interesting releases.

Thrash Attack #4 (2007)

52 pages, A5, xerox, cut n paste

Interview
Flagelator, Hirax, Sodomizer, Bloodfeast

My first introduction to this zine. I got this by trade. Then I bought issue 6 to issue 2. Only 4 interviews but with only four interviews, the editor put on a table of content. Good, that's how I my zine to be. A bit organized I would say. Wonder how 4 interviews + some reviews on audio stuff and zine takes 52 page? Well, HIRAX interview contributed by Laszlo consist of 11 pages (82 questions if I count it right!), damn long and informative interview I ever read in a small publication like this! Reviews are separated to several parts and also there's a 'concert preview', promoting Metal Forces Night. And yes, also some gig reviews (Possessed by Thrash, Keep It True, etc). Beside all this the zine have a "German Thrashers" section, promoting new German thrash bands with short (5 questions) interviews. For this issue Flo featured INFERNAL DEATH, EINSATZ KOMMANDO & WITCHING HOUR.

I think there's not many zine dedicated to one specific genre. Mostly will cover death and black metal or anything that is called "metal". Quite cool concept especially when you like thrash like me. Support!
