A Singapore's Look Into The Past
Failure

Evil Rotting is one of the longest running 'zine from South East Asia. Since 1988! I haven't seen anything earlier than the fourth issue (I have it some where. Will share it here soon). Didn't have the chance to read it them back (I was still a baby) then but the name is quite famous in the local Malaysian/Singaporean scene. It’s being mentioned in many thanks list.

They turned to pro-print magazine format probably since issue 4. The editor mentioned about transformation since #4 in the editorial, but the overall layout still maintained the old school style although they do have that magazine type layout (like in the review sections). 1 column per page with page border/frame artwork, either black background/white text or white background/black text or just the questions highlighted in black. No space being waste. Pictures of bands or their releases are plenty as long as there is space. Look a bit cramped but all these give this old-school feeling. The pages are numbered but no table of content.

The reviews are only on music stuffs. They are not alphabetically arranged and not rated. All have the release's cover art and/or band's picture or logo. The reviews start with the band's name and straight to the reviews. The title of the release is mentioned in the review. Quite unusual way of doing it. And these reviews are named "Down to Earth Reviews #1", numbered until #5 with each number having a page of its own. Meaning there are 5 pages (of small font size) of reviews.

The reviews don’t stop there. There are special pages on the labels/distros where the editor reviews the stuffs from them or short article of their bands. Each will have 1 or 2 pages dedicated to them: Those are
Dead Beat Media
Slapbet Records
The Metal Detector Music Promotions
Strain Eyes Mailorder
On The Edge of Hardcore (hardcore music stuffs)
Metalzone Distro's Tribute to Silent Death CD
Bakerteam Records
Muzik Box Productions

The interviews gather some of the legends either internationally (surprisingly they answered for a publication from this part of the planet) or locally. Great chat. Necrotic Chaos is a long one.

Another highlight is the article on Singapore's 80's/90's demo review section. Total of 9 pages covering 33 bands if I count it right and those being interviewed are not listed in there. The editor must re-release this in his label, Orgasmatron Production.

And lastly there is an article entitled "Failure" which I couldn't get what kind of 'failure' referred to. Maybe referred to failure in gig/concert and the parties involved or failure of those mentioned in the scene. Very brutal truth opinion being written here.

My copy is hand-numbered #52. Actual print-run is not specified. And this thick magazine also comes with 24 tracks pro-CD sampler (track list info on the back cover) and 3 pages of half size pictures of Dismember, Abhorer, Possessed, Entombed, Kreator and Nuctemeron.

Existence Denied #3

Existence Denied #3 (201?)
48 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Lifeless, Execration, Juanjo Castellano, Disrupted, Feral, Cut Up, Ashcloud, Lubricant, Exhumation, Bastard Grave, LIK, Endseeker, Purtenance, Revolting, Galvanizer,

The third issue from Singapore.

Nice layout, cut n paste style with some pages have frame artwork. I noticed that the interviews are like 10 questions but the questions are long one. Some are contributed/made by Maha Arjuna Wira.

Beside the interviews there are articles on Generation War, Backmasking, "Does Vinyl Really Sound Better" (this article continue from #2), 'A beginner's Guide to Buying Your First Turntable' (this one is very long and informative article) and 2 pages on news @ 'Hell's Gazette' and a book review.

Reviews are made by Harul Rohani. They are not rated and not alphabetically arranged. All have their front covers There are music reviews and the format not mentioned.

With extremely clear laser photocopy, making those artworks, pictures, and comics looks great. Except the front/back cover which uses green paper. I think its will look much better if it use white paper.

There is pictures of serial killer at middle of page like a pull-out and you can make a poster out of it.

I thought the third page is the editorial foreward, but it was a long article.

Domain #7 (2012)

Domain #7 (2012)
76pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Zygoatsis, Envenom, Battlestorm, Thorns of Hate, Nightwolf, Remains, Vault, Gempita Records, Lobotomy, Recrucify, Perversor, Goat Semen, Metalucifer

Article
Serial Killer: Mona Fandey

Good to see another issue of Domain. To date for me, this is best issue so far in terms of layout. Layout-wise, they are using frame/border artwork and Alan Corpse did a great job! As for the content, I have nothing to complain. Good selection of bands and the questions are interesting. I think this is the first time I read an interview with Gempita Records. For those who don't know, Gempita Records is Malaysian label which release some great vinyl title like the LP version of Sil Khannaz 1st album.

When you have Metalucifer, then you must have Neal Tanaka. Full page of him in inside the front cover and in the back cover.

The editor continues the tradition of having article on serial killer. I am not a fan of such article, but you rarely find any zine writes about Mona Fandey. You must read this. She's a witch and her victims probably killed for her black magic ritual.

Other 'tradition' is no table of content and the pages are not numbered. There is zine review and they are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

My copy is hand-numbered #195 out of 400. This issue is already sold-out from the editor. I got this by trade with member of Goatlusting Chaos. After 6 month or more I finally got the zine. As for you, I found some distro in Germany that have some copies. Get this now!

Abysmal Scripture #6 (Sep.2007)

Abysmal Scripture #6 (Sep.2007)
30pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Heptameron, Swamp, Confinement, Medieval, Sempiternus, Kampf Records, Farasu, Hellish/Empheris, Merciless Crucifixion, The Wreckage

Scene Report
Cuba

The final issue from Abysmal Scripture bundle sale. Not sure whether Al Fahmi release anymore issue after this. The zine delivers you all the content with the type of layout you already familiar with. The major improvement is now the zine is printed/xerox using laser printer. The pictures are crsytal clear!

There is a Rip Off list that I thought made by the editor but after reading further it is made by Nonoy of Paganfire.

To see a another issue will be great. DO let me know if you know #7 is on sale in any distro.

Abysmal Scripture #5 (Jun.2006)

Abysmal Scripture #5 (Jun.2006)
38pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Faceit Out, Detrimentum, Slejpnir, Au Revoir, Zubirun, Heathen Hoof, Hormala Fanzine, Vomepotro, Nocturnal Graves, Crucifire, Akal Sari

A little bit off than the usual release month. The reviews are short now. Ear Pleasure is only 1 part (in #4, there are 3 parts) but there are more gore movies reviews this time. The rest are pretty much the same like the older issues except in the news section the font size are too small than normal.

Abysmal Scripture #4 (Jan.2005)

Abysmal Scripture #4 (Jan.2005)
40pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Imperial Hordes, Deadmoon, Thorn, Grabschander, Putridity, Prayer Book Zine, Vow Dreams, Desaster, Nefarious Azarak, Atavism, Litham/Lelahel Prod., The No Mads, Excarnated

Releasing 1 issue a year is quite impressive. Further improvement on the xerox quality. The layout style follows the one they started in #3. It will be great if both answers in Prayer Book interview shown here (what the hell I'm talking about here? that's for you to find out).

Before the release of this issue, Beast Petrify have just released "Webbed In Living Hell" so the editor (Al Falmi) take the chance in the interview asking the bands their opinion on his latest CD.

One thing that annoys me is having picture in the middle of the page (for the section with no column or 1 column). This is what I meant with 'this kind of arrangement' in #3. My old eyes have problem in joining back the sentence but probably this problem only applicable to me only :-)

The gore film & videos reviews are not as much as the previous issues. I noticed the editor added his comment at almost every answer which is good since he elaborate further the point of discussion.

Abysmal Scripture #3 (Jan.2004)

Abysmal Scripture #3 (Jan.2004)
40pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Parricide, Human Error, Argon, Nobody, Dick Stink, Germinale, Flesh Ripper, Carpe Noctem, Break The Silence, Rudra, Age Of Agony, Twilight Zone

"Intervisual Music Fanzine Emphasises On Gore & Metal!!!", how's that for the tagline? Exactly a year later, spawn another issue of Abysmal Scripture. The xerox quality is better than #2. There are few more changes. The obvious one is the back cover. The editor is now using 2 columns per page for interviews (no column for reviews). In the video reviews, the editor put some still image of the video but I honestly don't like this kind of arrangement.

The rest (writing style, etc) are still the same. There is a short intro before the interview and ended with the band's bio & discography. Back then it was sold with Still Supreme Chapter 3 Compilation tape.

Abysmal Scripture #2 (Jan.2003)

Abysmal Scripture #2 (Jan.2003)
60pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Atheist Fanzine, Suicidal Winds, Ghouls, Despairance, Agathocles, Surgical Dissection, Chainsaw, Shrunken & Mummified Zine, Bloodthirst, Noir Atasya, Juglans Regia, Maelstrom666 Zine, Dogface, Crystal Tears, Vrykolakas, Deadhead Zine

Scene Report
Thailand

I got contacted by a distro and mentioned they have some copies of Abysmal Scripture for sale. That is a surprise for me. So here I am presenting another old issues here (even the staples have rusted badly) . I bought the debut issue when it was released many years ago. If my memory serves me right, the layout is pretty much the same. For your info, the editor of the zine is also in a thrash metal band called Beast Petrify.

The xerox quality is not at the best quality and I think the master copy are printed using bubble jet printer which does not give a sharp printing quality. The layout is made using standard MS Word functions (3 columns per page). The font size are small, the kind that I like. The pages are numbered and have table of content.

His English are great. Look at the name of the review section; Expressive Life Visionaries (video reviews), Bloodlusting Hunger for Dissection (horror/gore films), Ear Pleasure (music reviews) and Visional Thoughts (zine). The reviews are not in alphabetical order and they are rated. There is also a news section at the last pages of the zine and the scene report accompanied by band's logo and pictures.

If you look at the front cover, it is using laser color xerox/printing which I think a very rare at the time. And yes, you need full color if not the splatter for pictures on the back cover will lose it 'goriness' :-)

For contact address, read the review of the latest issue.

Domain #4 (2008)

Domain #4 (2008)
72 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Weapon, Witchhammer/Infernal Demon, Sabbat, Sickness666, Abigail, Eternal Oath, Legion of Death, Infernal Execrator, Ironfist, Hayagriva

This issue is entitled as "The Witches Rune" already sold out long time ago. A friend of mine gave this photocopied copy. Not really a good copy as you can see from the pictures above. Some parts can't be seen clearly. It was not stapled too so I had to write the page number to avoid myself getting confuse. Anyway, I'm sure the actual copy is better than this. Very good cover & frame artwork by Sickness666, as always. No page number but have table of content. Here you will have some interesting interviews and very a long one with Sabbat that includes their discography and the front covers! Syaiful normally puts discography after the interview ends. And you can also see Hayagriva without corpse-paint, cute! There are 'caption' on the pictures so it’s nice (and funny!) to read them. On the layout, as usual he use frame art and with 2 columns per page for the interview while on the review page is made in cut n paste style.

Reviews are not rated and not in alphabetical order. Some have picture of the bands instead of putting front cover or band's logo. The reviews are separated to different section; "Past, Present...Forever" (vinyl?), "Face of Darkness" (demo), "Alliance to The Powerthrone" (album/CD). Too many Desaster, eh? Here's another column, an article called "Infernal Voices", an article on a cannible from Japan, with some 'eye-candy' there. Last but not least, a gig review (Sabbat in Singapore). The next 2 issues will be special issues so bands & labels are discouraged to send promo. We now know #5 is Desaster Tribute issue and #6 is out already without any review section.

The original copy is hand-numbered 165/300 and thanks again for giving me a copy of this.

Domain #6 (2010)

Domain #6 (2010)
44 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Nuclear Warfare, Ancient Horns, Mantak, Hirilorn, Diocletian, Antacid, Imperial Tyrants, Impiety

Excellent xerox quality (laser! the type every zine should use these day). No changes at all on the layout department. Frame artwork on every page just like the previous issue (talking about issue #5, I didn't know it was included the Desaster boxset!). This issue use the artwork created by Oik Wasfuk (oikwasfuk@yahoo.com). Great and talented artist! You can see lots of killer artwork especially on the frame and on page #3. Interviews are OK. No review in this issue though due to tape/CD/vinyl deck not functioning (can any metalhead live without this? how do you cope with that man!). There is a column on serial killer, this time featuring Albert Fish. I'm not into this topic so I skip and read this last. But I found some quote that is interesting (little girls have more flavour than little boys). Also one funny thing, he insert wool in his anus and set it on fire. Well, not many will do that except for those jackass in Jackass. There are also some sort of mini-poster on the inside of the front & back cover (Shyaithan & Metalucifer). Syaiful did a good job again. This zine is printed in 300 copies and I've seen some Euro distro selling this zine. Get it before it sold-out.

Dark Legend #2 (2007)

Dark Legend #2 (2007)
100 pg, A4, xerox, English

Interview
Vivianne Crowley, Maxine sanders, Draegon Undomiel, Mayhem, Olivia Durdin Robertson, Doreen Valiente, Burzum, Explicit, Equinox

Article
The Good Old Hard Rock Sungai Segget Days, Dark Legend Arts Promotion, A Tribute and Salutation to Barchiel of As-Sahar, Tribute to Euronymous, The Church of Satan, Mastic@ and The Christians Evil

Looking at my journal, this is one of my earliest reviews that I made in 2008 and very long one too. Because it is too long, I skip it and choose to write on newer zine. I also dont like reading my own handwriting haha. Now I pity my school teachers, having to read my awful handwriting. Only now I had the strength to read and type them here.

This is not the usual reading like other metal zine. First, you see weird names in the interview list, right? They are not from any bands but personal from various groups practising wicca, occultism, witchcraft and paganism. Secondly, Reymond (the editor) wrote or elaborate certain thing in the between the interview so you will know some info about the issue discussed and also you know there are so much hatred towards Mastika (more about this later).

One of the highlight for me are the letters Reymond to Euronymous (before his death ofcourse!) which is presented there although he compiled it in form or "question & answer" like a normal interview. He also elaborate Euronymous's view on satanism which is quite enlightening. Equinox is not interview but Darkness letter to Reymond. Another highlight is the Burzum interview with Varg when he was in jail. There are some questions that are not answered by Varg, I wonder why?

Layout-wise, ok for the interview (2 column perpage) but the review using 4 columns that is too near with each other make it looks weird. Talking about review, some review are only like 5 lines. Very short but have logo of the band for every review.

Other stuff in this issue: a page each for "Images of Norwegian Black Metal" and "Images of Northern Darkness" (pictures of bands with corpse paint), some funny cartoon, promoting some artwork made by him or other artist (with explanation about the artwork), compilation of questions from other zine and with the answer by Reymond.

If not mistaken, I read in a zine in late 1990's, Reymond said DL will be released only in 5 issues. Like a pentagram that have 5 points. I forgot other details of that interview. If calculate, first issue in 1997, second issue in 2007, the fifth issue will be in 2037. I will be 60 years old haha. Anyway, this is just a humour. Dont take in seriuosly. The 10 year gap is caused by, none other than the "black metal issue"! I dont want to go in detail about that but read on some interesting 'stories' related with this editor.

Mastika (a local magazine) accussed Reymond is starting a branch of Church of Satan in Malaysia, under the teaching from Euronymous and have thousands of followers in Malaysia. Can you believe that? Well, the folks here believe that. Together with writings from Harian Metro (a local tabloid newspaper, said to be the largest Malay-written newspaper), that fuels up the anti-metal movement in Malaysia. I was shocked to see Reymond picture in that magazine (I dont buy Mastika but used to read the sex stories at the newsstand while waiting for my bus). They blurred the face like he's a rapist or some criminal but I've seen that picture before. After that police starts interrogating him. There's a lot of info about this in this zine.

And throughout this issue, you will read his own view and also as protest to media, government in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia on how they treated metal community.

If you noticed, the back cover is a blank paper. Actually behind it is an artwork by Reymond which quite provoking.

The editor also run a label and involved in some bands.

Domain #5 (2009)

68 page, A4, xerox

Interview
Desaster, Evilord

This might be my shortest review. And you might assumed that is because it only contain 2 bands? But how come 68 pages? OK then, this issue is DESASTER TRIBUTE ISSUE and Syaiful have made a great tribute issue in the underground metal scene. He make the effort of interviewing the band members (past and present!) and also members of Hellbanger Moselfranken (short question asked about their view on Desaster). There are too many people interviewed here and I'm lazy to write them down. There's lots of photos & flyers as well as the band discography (and photos of that as well). There are also lots of photo and flyers of Desaster. This is my second issue of Domain. My first one was their debut issue release years ago. Back then, it was all xerox. But in this issue, the front cover are hard printed paper while the content are xerored. Xerox quality is good, I wish the print quality of the picture can be made better. Limited release of 300 copies, the first 50 copies comes with Evilord's MCDr + DVD of Desaster (Headbangers Open Air) and Desaster patch. My copy is hand-numbered 129 so I missed those goodies except for the patch.
