Bathory "Satan My Master" Analysis

Very simple name and front cover artwork for zine. This is the debut issue of self-acclaimed magazine called Knife Magazine from Denmark. Cut n paste style. No page number, no table of content. Not much pictures related to the bands interviewed. The font size is just nice. The layout can be better although it already has a clear/good photocopy print quality.

Editor's email was handwritten. I hope I get right.

Reviews on music. Not alphabetically arranged and not rated.

First time reading an analysis of a song, particularly a Bathory song.

The interview with Call From The Grave is interesting. The editor of Call From The Grave is follower of Jesus Christ. Whether the picture (a man making the hand signal 'come here' to the naked lady) in the interviews was intentional. This interview was originally made for the editor's old zine, the third issue of Bestial Death.

Robert Erwin Howard
Stealing Is My Business And Business is Good
The Dawn Of The Iconoclast
Sam Pekinpah, Ballad For A Demon

From Greece came this zine. In cut n paste style or 2 columns per page with border artwork. Multiple type of fonts used. The most appealing one is the electric typewriter-type. First perfectly with the cut n paste style compared with Times New Roman one. Layout wise, all good. Maybe the pictures are too dark but still OK.

The reviews are split to the format. There is separate section for EP, Zines, LP, Tapes and lastly CD reviews. These reviews are not alphabetically arranged and not rated.

The editor, Unholy Sodomizer, mentioned in the editorial he stops the zine making but then has the motivation with #6. I saw #7 (release in 2015) in some distro. Will be checking that one too. Hope I am not too late.

The Methylordian Anticrusade - Final Chapter

This German zine is actual laser printed so the quality is almost near as pro-printed publication.

"The Final Command" was written on the front page. No idea what that's mean. Maybe it's the last issue? Already number 34.

The layout is very basic 1 column per page MS Word type of layout. The font size is a bit large, pages not numbered and not table of content.

"Reviewlution" is the section for reviews. "Drucksachen" is review section for printed publication. The reviews are not alphabetically arranged and not rated. Just music reviews, no front cover artwork which look a bit dull.

There are some artworks in the pages of this issue but not many. What contribute to the thickness of this issue is (beside the font size) the interviews are very long. Pity I don't understand German.

No contact address available in the zine.

North From Here Danmark 2000 (2001)
52 pages, A5, German, xeroxed

This was given together with Sin Is There Zine but not sure in which issue. It's not a music zine. Most probably it is about the country Denmark? I have to say the front cover looks very cool!

It is written in German. You can see maps, pictures of old castles, historical artifact.

This is available for free (only pay postage) from schattenmanns.wordpress.com

Isten Fanzine Churches (2017)

Isten Fanzine Churches (2017)
100 pages, 21cs x 21cm, English, pro-printed

I couldn't find the reason of this publication is made. Some words written at the back cover mention "An ABC book for both builders and burners in all the glorious colours of rust and soot".

It is not in the interview/answer style like normal zine. It is a series of answers made or arranged into articles and divided into several chapters. No photo of the bands/individuals, just drawing of them with lots of pictures of buildings, structures which I think from around Finland. And no reviews either.

These chapters talk about music. I couldn't find the relation of the Chapter's title with the content inside the chapter (they didn't talk about Iron Maiden either).

Below are the individuals featured in this book. You may find them in several chapters talking on certain topics:

Mikko Aspa (Clandestine Blaze)
Ville Pirinen (Seremonia)
Werwolf (Satanic Warmaster)
Mikael Haavisto (Ranger)
Jori von Meriläinen (Gentry Lord)
Ulla Ahola (M.O.R.A.)
Yaki (M.O.R.A.)
Amel Khelif (M.O.R.A.)
Ville Valavuo (Speedtrap)
Jussi Lehtisalo (Circle)

Jonatan Johansson (Vorum)
Maria Mattila (Mara Balls)
Kari Rajala (Warp Transmission)
Teemu Bergman (Myrkky-Käärme)
Kimmo Kuusniemi (Sarcofagus)

The chapters are:
Chapter One: Where Eagles Dare
Chapter Two: Revelations
Chapter Three: Flight of Icarus
Chapter Four: Die With Your Boots On
Chapter Five: The Trooper
Chapter Six: Still Life
Chapter Seven: Quest for Life
Chapter Eight: Sun And Steel
Chapter Nine: To Tame A Land

The contents are good. Interesting topics being discussed. This is Isten!
The layout is normal book layout. Can be boring at times looking at the same black & white layout (or brown).

Let's break it down by chapters (who's in which chapter):

Extreme Metal Independent #2 (Feb.2020)

Extreme Metal Independent #2 (Feb.2020)
60 pages, A5 size, Malay/English, pro-printed

Interviews
Death Vomit, Carnation, Narsamum, IEON, Septigorepholic, Dee (Murder, Obscurial, Suffercation), Wafat

Gig Report
MAMAT Fest 2020

Bio
Hysteroctomy, Berdosa, Erectus, Treasoner's Loyalty

I missed out the first issue. When I asked on the second one which was on pre-order at the time, was told only 12pcs left. So now I have in my hand the second issue, hand-numbered 38/200.

It comes in plastic cover. Couple of half size zine here coming in this kind of packaging, I noticed. Some effort is being made here with putting the sticker just to fit perfectly on the empty space at the top of plastic.

The editor; Olee and fellow writers (to name a few); Suffian Suboh, Matthew Manang, Zizi Amri, Hatecrew and in partnership with Dropdead Distro & Garage Palakbesi are putting together this issue. Their writings (reviews/interviews) differ with each other, but all are interesting to read.

The pages are not numbered and no table of content. There is no specific style of layout. They are either in cut n paste style, or normal MS word layout 1 column per page with frame or texts on top pictures. All these printed (or laser printed) in full color. The Septigorepholic interview is on red background. Nice!

Reviews are scattered and not in a specific section. They are made to look like an article, and this consumed 1 full page including the band's logo, picture and artwork of the release. This may take up to 2 full pages.

Beside this there is "Upcoming!" section which is on band's upcoming releases.

And there is Death Vomit at the zine's center page. I think it’s better made on its own instead of having article/review printed at the back. Then will be an awesome pull-out poster.

Every copy also comes with a sticker.

Thrashing Shit

This issue continues in the style of issue #6 which is full pro-printed issue. I think this is type you will expect from Deadhead from now.

Issue #7 is 180 pages thick. The biggest ever so far. This is equivalent to like 8 issues of normal zine.

The layout, the interview styles are the same as previous issue. I will be repeating myself so better you guys read my previous reviews. In some pages, maybe as filler the editor some "The Essential Timeless Metaller's Digest" reviews which old classic releases.

Also consumed half page articles on Schattenmann Publishing, info on back issues, Black Mark Production.

The interviews are very in-depth and entertaining to read as usual. Rare old pictures are plenty as well including as pin-up poster or the back cover. You can see the articles are more this time. And the 'foreword' continues after the editorial columns end to another 2 separate sections. The editor really voices out his opinions in some of the articles and ofcourse great research done on the topics.

Issue #8 is in the making, taking longer time to be out it seems. Hope this will be available soon.

Caveat! Issue XI-XV (March 2021)

Caveat! Issue XI-XV (March 2021)
100 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Hyperdontia, Eliran Kantor, Gorb, Cryptworm, Gasp, Sauts Alastor, Frozen Soul, Amy Hamdan, Disfear, An Albatross, Exhumation, Aten Athirah, The Infernal Sea, Necrot, Discarnage, Vengeance By Proxy, Ruin, Witchgrind, Karmazid, Begrabnis, Lavatory, -(16)-, Ady Shutterscream, Skepticism,  Varmt Stal Helvete, Iron Monkey

Couple of months later, came another issue of this [Mega]zine. I counted like more than 10 contributors now. Excellent work I must say. The size now A4 with the pages in glossy paper (105 gsm Matte Art Paper, to be exact). Cover is on 230 gsm with Matte Lamination in perfect binding. Yes, it sounds like a book because it is a book.

The content is in full colored, layout 3 columns per page mostly with text on pictures in the background. With color, those featuring visual artist with their artwork looks a lot better compared with the previous issue. The front cover artwork made by the editor himself.

The long editorial section (with the editor's picture) is still here. I almost mistaken this as band's interview page because it has logo and photo on the page. Just like normal interview page.

The content pretty much similar like previous issue. Interviews (with bands and visual artist), articles, artwork/drawing, poems, comics ("Issue & Tissue" still here. Another good topic shown again), artworks and this time around they added reviews section called "Audiophiles Transmission" (not in alphabetical order, not rated, and all have their front cover artwork).

I just knew that Nintendocore is another music genre. Oh my... Anyway, visual artist interviews quite interesting for me since I am not use to read this type of interviews. Learnt few things here.

Mine handnumbered 157/500.

Check out also his label Dogma Artistic Guerrilla. The advertisement at the back cover says Cosmic Hell Pariah tape is only RM1 (USD 1 R.O.W).

Morbid Writes #3 (March 2021)

Morbid Writes #3 (March 2021)
72 pages, A5 size, English, xerox

Interviews
Snet, Galvanizer, Draghkar, Mortal Wound, Burial, Cryptic Hatred, Intrepid, Koffin

It took 2 years to release this issue. We can see excellent print quality (laser printed) now.

The layout improved a lot too. The pages are numbered with table of content. Using page border and uses small font which make this issue 'compact' with lot to read. The editor also an artist

Gore-met food still here. This time with Angel's Hair Pasta, Feetloaf, Steamed Hams, Maxi-Pad Thai, Necrony Cocktail, Blood-red Velvet Cake. You can visual it yourself how the dishes will look like. But remember it must be 'gore'.

Others in this issue are comics, movie reviews, "Audio Nasties" (which is music review) and 11 pages on ads/flyers. Reviews are not alphabetically arranged and not rated.

The only thing I don’t like is the orange paper for cover. Keep it in white paper will be just fine. Black & white is the trve colour for zine.

Ribut Dari Timur (2017)

Ribut Dari Timur (2017)
93 pages, 19.5cm x 22.5cm, Malay

This was first printed in 2017. In my hand now is the second print in 2019.

Abd Aziz Itar, the writer of this hardcover book is widely known in Malaysian scene as the fanzine editor of Vortex From The East. One of earliest and longest running zine in the underground scene. I first thought the book is his zine anthology or compilation of his zine in a book like many books available nowadays because the name of the book is Malay translation of the zine's name.

What you will read here is his personal experience in the Malaysian underground scene for more than 30 years since the 80's, being an editor, in bands or other projects.

There is no specific chapter, but we can tell if the first letter in page start with big size font, maybe it's a new chapter.

The first chapter talks about his experience during the early days in 80's vs today and what caused him to be in the scene and later editing his own fanzine and many more in these 28pages. Also, some pictures related with what he is writing there. Many old bands photos when he talks about Malaysian scene when he's about to start his second zine: Vortex From The East.

Chapter Two is about his mail writing to his penpal, bands and labels around the world, zine editing, and memorable gig attended. Many of them was not famous or just release their first demo like Sakis of Rotting Christ, or even Euronymous of Mayhem at the time. Many more band pictures. This is until page 39.

The Third Chapter talked about the scene in Kuala Lumpur, CM (Central Market), Brickfields.

The fourth and fifth Chapter resume back on pen-pals during the BI era which mean Before Internet ;-) elaborated further and with their pictures as well.

Sixth Chapter talked about international labels and Popkomm Music Festival.

Chapter Seven is on local labels namely Valentine Sound Production, Dark Journey Records, Ultra Hingax Productions and Nebiula Productions.

Chapter Eight is on variety of music styles by Malaysian old & new underground bands and towards the end a bit on other South East Asian countries and ofcourse more pictures.

Chapter Nine talked about open mindedness of the BI Era where fans of different genre can mix around and can have influence on each other in music making while fans or bands in current era confined to only specific genre.

In the last chapter, he asked whether true underground scene still exist in Malaysia or any part of the world. He then answers this. The book ends with his all-time favourite albums.

This is my first book on a person experience in metal scene so I can't compare with other books. Just glad somebody in the Malaysian scene came up with this.

I hope to see more books of Malaysian and South East Asian scene.

Feed The Beast #1 (2019)

Feed The Beast #1 (2019)
64 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Antiversum, Pentacle, Coscradh, Dead Congregation, Jupiterian, Taphos

After reading the third issue, I need to get Ipp's older issues. Finally, I got the first issue. Printed on thick paper. It starts with 2 pages of picture of Nebula (I think, in black and white).

To compare with the third one, the layout follows the same style which is not a single type is being used here. Every bands has its own type of layout:

Antiversum: black background, 3 columns per page but has this text going around the circle which is quite interesting.

Pentacle: 3 columns per page on grey background and mostly half of the page is huge graphic/artwork

Coscradh: different type of font (like old scripture text) on white background

Dead Congregation: Dark background image, 3 columns per page and have photo that fits to just 1 column.

Jupiterian: still 3 columns but I dont know how to describe the first 2 pages, grey background. The last 2 page is normal 3 columns.

Taphos: back to black background, 3 columns and have 1 page before interview full photo (just like issue 3).

What I forgot to mention in my previous review of issue 3 is no picture of the bands. Just some artwork related to the band/release or maybe not but still blend well with the interviews.

The interviews have it date, so you know when it was made.

No review or articles. Just interviews. Questions doesn't directly on the bands or its releases but also touch on the band's concept or lyrics but ask in interesting way.

And yes, no contact address. The pages not numbered and no table of content.

Pentacle interview is mostly revolving around 1 release only, "Invocations of The Death-ridden" 12" split LP with Sadistik Intent. You are like reading world war history in these pages.

Second one already arrived in Malaysia from Germany. Hope to finish reading it soon and have it updated here.

12 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interview
Altar Of Perversion

Articles
Gracing The Emptiness (David "Necrovore")
Why Are You Still Into Black Metal (by Northwind of The Sinister Flame Magazine)

This is like reading a educational textbook. 3 columns per page with no picture or graphic at all and big size font. The interview with Altar of Perversion only has the band logo. There are 2 music reviews that are not rated. These are advance material from Communion (Chile) and Vánargandr (New Zealand).

The interviews are 10 questions long, but the answers are very long.

The articles from David and Northwind are deep into BM ideology. Quite enlightening and though-provoking.

The print-run is 500 copies. The website is not working now. schattenmanns.wordpress.com might have some copies.

Metal Punk Artzine #1 (2021)

Metal Punk Artzine #1 (2021)
44 pages, A5 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Chany Pilote (Inepsy), Benjamin Velasco (Gravelord Artwork), P.B69 Crusthammer Fanzine

The size is smaller than A5. The content is printed in glossy paper. Some in full color. Stated on the front cover 'experiment issue'. So, what is the editor (Ait of No Signature Art) expecting from this maiden issue? And what are you, the reader expecting from this?

I've seen some artzine before, but this is my first one in pro-printed and also the first with metal/punk theme.

What you will have here are fanart mainly by Ait, the editor of this publication. The layout is OK. He uses white text on black background. Nothing fancy. Having this is pro-print do help making looks better. The result will not be the same if it's in photocopy or laser printed like the others I have seen.

You will see art related to Döraid, Children of Technology, Black Uniforms, Blüdwülf, Nightwolf, Inepsy, Warfare, Genöcide, Acidez, Parasite, Onslaught, Bafomet, Black Demons, Anti Cimex to name a few, with some info on the bands or their releases and Ait personal comments on them.

There are also interviews which is also a metal punk artist and an article on MPDS (Metal Punk Death Squad) Malaysian Chapter by Satanwolf.

No table of content but the pages are numbered.

Well-done for the first issue. Not much to read (I wish to have more interviews) but a lot of artworks to look at.
