Zine Death Metal #42 (November 2021)

Zine Death Metal #42 (November 2021)
72 pages, A4, English/Portuguese, pro-printed

Interviews:
Sarcastic, Soul Devourment, Lividity, Draconian Oracle, Sonneillon Black Metal, Scornforger, Legion of Wolves, Porrada!!!, Gorgon

Bio:
Kalibas

Couple of later after the release of #41, so soon came #42.

Layout-wise the same like previous issue. And so does the content like before start the interview, there are short info (the band's name, genre, country, interviewee, interview date).

In glossy paper for the cover. All in black and white. The pages are numbered, no table of content, cut n paste style, type writer font style. Questions less than 20. 16 on average. Questions are about current music/releases, lyric/theme of the band, history.

Gorgon is the best 16 answers in this zine. The other are OK too.

The reviews cover music only. They are not rated and not alphabetically arranged. Less than 20 reviews and that's the end of this zine. The layout here is in 2 columns per page, some with page border and using the type writer font type. The old school-look still present.

Flip on the other side, the other half is the Portuguese version of the magazine of the same bands. Not sure the content the same or not (just like the previous issue) but I believe they are translation in this language.

I saw some question in English section was not translated to English. Why?

I was curious on why Sonneillon add 'Black Metal' to its name. But this was not asked in the interview. Might be there is a Sonneillon Death Metal out there.

Hand numbered 72 of 200. My copy of issue #41 was 70/200. That was close number.

"See You in Hell", section of band's line-up that has died recently. It's a regular feature.

Our own martyr Nighcrawler and Zen are in the pages as well. Rest in Power my brothers!!!

Zine Death Metal #41 (August 2021)

Zine Death Metal #41 (August 2021)
72 pages, A4 size, in English/Portuguese, pro-printed

Interviews:
Darkness Creature, Lachrima Corphus, Lullaby, Goat Prayers, Cathing, Nocturnal, Elizabethan Walpurga, Embolism, Infest, Orthostat, Torturer, Gut

Band Bio/Article:

Piledriver
Fermento

This is not the first issue of Zine Death Metal. My first encounter is with the 'Female metal tribute' issue (issue #37) which I will talk about it in another post.

In June 2021 celebrated their 13 years in existence. 13 a good number is it? And came out #41.

About this zine, half of the zine is English. After reaching the centerfold, flip it and there's the same band & content/layout in Portuguese in the other half. Interesting concept but you are paying for the other half that you can't read (or read it in English).

The layout is in cut n paste style using old type writer font. The pages numbered but no table of content.

Before the start of the interview, there's no introduction but there are some notes (band name, genre, country, interviewee, date of the interview & band's contact address or email).

Questions are around 13 to 15. The topics are mostly on music. Answers by the band are very long. I think the original one was made 'live' in Portuguese (to the bands from that region) than translated to English.

Torturer is from Canada, not the one from Chile. So take note on this.

In review section the layout different. Its in white background with page border. The reviews are not rated and not alphabetically arranged.

There is a section called "See You in Hell". In this section is about band's line-up that has died recently. Not sure whether this is a regular section but it is a first time me seeing this.

My copy is hand numbered 70 of 200.

I bought couple more issues until in issue...f (I don't remember which issue now) where the editor mentioned there are some issues with the postal services (or whatever, that is beyond his control).

He apologies but I haven't get that issue. I stop buying afterwards.

Fiesta Metalogue (May 2021)

Fiesta Metalogue (May 2021)
140+ pages, 19cm x 22cm, Malay

The second book from Abd Aziz Itar. Managed to buy this at its first print run.

Written in Malay. This is a soft cover book, the pages in glossy paper and only this one version available.

The first one is "Ribut Dari Timur". You can search this site for some info.

Now he have table of content which is needed since this time he is writing about his experience going to metal music festivals around the world.

There are only 8 chapters with 1 chapter per festival so means only 8 festivals that we going to read in this book.

The Festivals:

1: Wacken Open Air, Germany (2010)
2: Bloodstock Open Air, England (2013, 2015)
3: True Thrash Fest, Japan (2012, 2018)
4: Brutal Assault, Czech
5: Hammersonic, Indonesia
6: Summer Breeze, Germany
7: Download, Australia
8: Pulp Summer Slam, Philippines

He described the atmosphere around festivals, their journey to the venue, short chat with people there. Not to mentioned lots of pictures from the venues.

He's sarcastic, put some humor on the caption of the pictures. At the end of the chapter, he summarized it and gave his rating. Some festivals he went more than once. This is how the chapters look like.

Layout-wise this is much better unlike the previous book which now has colored background. Not just plain white like normal (boring) book.

League Of Khaos Issue #2 (August 2021)

League Of Khaos Issue #2 (August 2021)
192 pages, A5, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Mournful Moon, Lingua Mortis Artwork, Dusk In Silence, Ninkharsag, Les Chants Du Hasard, Wormwitch, Barbalans, Kilatus, Deleted, Afsky, Kirous, The Ironfist, Gorgon, Temple Of Gorgons, Ibliss, Oldskull, Tvsk, Necrolatry Records, Together to The Stars, Winter Lantern, Ish Kerioth, Devoured, Sijjin

Article
Dungeon Synth; A View From The Northern Tower

Scene Reports
China by Dienysian Records
Peru by Mauricio of Painless Zine

Earlier in May 2021, Zizi Amri released his maiden issue. And now just after 3 months in my hands his second issue!

Still in A5 size, pro-printed, perfect-bind format however (with some assistance of fellow contributors Ason UDZ & Ibn Khaldun) this issue is nearly 200 pages thick.

Table of content is present however the pages are not numbered just like the previous issue. Layout-wise looks like the debut issue; 2 columns per page, some uses those typewriter type of fonts giving some old school look, small font size, and no space is being wasted. This issue again packed with texts, pictures and artworks.

All is great in the layout, except on the interviews where he put picture in middle in between the 2 pages. It doesn't look well visually. The picture/logo can't be seen in full.

Beside interviews you will have:
Chain of Khaos (news section, with label's/band's info)
Proof of Existence (like bio with short interviews made into article form; Azgarath, Huthamah)
Audio of Khaos (music/zine review section. Reviews not alphabetically arranged, not rated with front cover included)

Unfortunately, this issue already sold-out in less than a week. Only 120 copies were made and mine is numbered #16 of 120 copies of the 1st edition. However, you can ask for digital copy for small amount of money. Editor also selling some defect copies at a cheap price but didn't mention what are the defects.

Caveat! Issue XI-XV (March 2021)

Caveat! Issue XI-XV (March 2021)
100 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Hyperdontia, Eliran Kantor, Gorb, Cryptworm, Gasp, Sauts Alastor, Frozen Soul, Amy Hamdan, Disfear, An Albatross, Exhumation, Aten Athirah, The Infernal Sea, Necrot, Discarnage, Vengeance By Proxy, Ruin, Witchgrind, Karmazid, Begrabnis, Lavatory, -(16)-, Ady Shutterscream, Skepticism,  Varmt Stal Helvete, Iron Monkey

Couple of months later, came another issue of this [Mega]zine. I counted like more than 10 contributors now. Excellent work I must say. The size now A4 with the pages in glossy paper (105 gsm Matte Art Paper, to be exact). Cover is on 230 gsm with Matte Lamination in perfect binding. Yes, it sounds like a book because it is a book.

The content is in full colored, layout 3 columns per page mostly with text on pictures in the background. With color, those featuring visual artist with their artwork looks a lot better compared with the previous issue. The front cover artwork made by the editor himself.

The long editorial section (with the editor's picture) is still here. I almost mistaken this as band's interview page because it has logo and photo on the page. Just like normal interview page.

The content pretty much similar like previous issue. Interviews (with bands and visual artist), articles, artwork/drawing, poems, comics ("Issue & Tissue" still here. Another good topic shown again), artworks and this time around they added reviews section called "Audiophiles Transmission" (not in alphabetical order, not rated, and all have their front cover artwork).

I just knew that Nintendocore is another music genre. Oh my... Anyway, visual artist interviews quite interesting for me since I am not use to read this type of interviews. Learnt few things here.

Mine handnumbered 157/500.

Check out also his label Dogma Artistic Guerrilla. The advertisement at the back cover says Cosmic Hell Pariah tape is only RM1 (USD 1 R.O.W).

Metal Punk Artzine #1 (2021)

Metal Punk Artzine #1 (2021)
44 pages, A5 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Chany Pilote (Inepsy), Benjamin Velasco (Gravelord Artwork), P.B69 Crusthammer Fanzine

The size is smaller than A5. The content is printed in glossy paper. Some in full color. Stated on the front cover 'experiment issue'. So, what is the editor (Ait of No Signature Art) expecting from this maiden issue? And what are you, the reader expecting from this?

I've seen some artzine before, but this is my first one in pro-printed and also the first with metal/punk theme.

What you will have here are fanart mainly by Ait, the editor of this publication. The layout is OK. He uses white text on black background. Nothing fancy. Having this is pro-print do help making looks better. The result will not be the same if it's in photocopy or laser printed like the others I have seen.

You will see art related to Döraid, Children of Technology, Black Uniforms, Blüdwülf, Nightwolf, Inepsy, Warfare, Genöcide, Acidez, Parasite, Onslaught, Bafomet, Black Demons, Anti Cimex to name a few, with some info on the bands or their releases and Ait personal comments on them.

There are also interviews which is also a metal punk artist and an article on MPDS (Metal Punk Death Squad) Malaysian Chapter by Satanwolf.

No table of content but the pages are numbered.

Well-done for the first issue. Not much to read (I wish to have more interviews) but a lot of artworks to look at.

Painless #3 (2021)

Painless #3 (2021)
64 pages, A4 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Thy Dominion, Narcolepsia, Begräbnis, Putrefiance, Retch, Evil Damn, Autophagy, Paganfire, Insanity Cult, Podridao, Blasphemous Divisions, Fetid, Impure, Sartegos, Transcosmic Blasphemizer, Grafvitnir, Arkhon, Verthebral, Kurnugia, Professus Abominari, Spectrum Mortis, Caligula, Katari

After 7 years from the last release, now in my hand the 3rd issue.

Front cover and the editorial looks 'primitive' and old school but starts from page 3 onwards turns to normal magazine kind of layout. 2 or 3 columns per page.

This is pro-printed so no complain at all on the layout. The pages on the content is not really white background. It has this 'photocopy stained' like using old photocopy machine. It doesn't look 'clean' which I think the editor a bit creative on this.

Interviews are in-depth. Editor lots of knowledge on the bands and this can be seen in the questions.

The bands are mainly from Latin American scene, and these are featured in the language I can understand. Maybe these interviews were translated from Spanish/Portuguese to English for this issue. The answers are very long, and these are in small font size. Very good reading here. Fetid interview has 1-line empty space it between the paragraphs. Looks weird though.

Reviews are on tapes and CD (alphabetically arrange and not rated). They are scattered throughout the zine. Zine review is there too.

Some bands mentioned Sabaoth repeatedly. A cult name it seems. Remembered some local distro selling their demo in the 90's.

It comes with huge poster SURRENDER OR DIVINITY, as a tribute to Avaejee.

My War Issue 7 (2021)

My War Issue 7 (2021)
44 pages, A5 size, English, pro-printed

Interviews
Oily Boys, Tom Moran, Plague Thirteen, Mutant Strain, Crimes Of The Crown, Mentira, Cage Kicker

This is a hc/punk zine. Printed on Matte paper and printed & distributed in South East Asia by Sonic Rage Records of Malaysia. Does this edition differ with other print version in other region? It shouldn't but I don't have that info. However, this version I have nothing to complain about on the print quality.

There is no review, only interviews.

The pages not numbered and does not have table of content. Everything is in black background with text. Band pictures will normally consume 1 whole page.

The interviews are interesting, long answer by the bands. Although this genre is not I am into a lot, but it kept me reading.

The editor, Kristof Mondy also put some photographs of ruins of old building (nice!) or from gig. You visit their IG below for more of this.

Awe Metal 2 Minggu (2021)

Awe Metal 2 Minggu (2021)
42 pages, A5 size, Malay, pro-printed

Another Malaysian comic artist in the underground scene.

There are few issues released before this but this my introduction with the work of this artist; Jerry and the comic. Whether the previous one has connection to this issue, not sure. Maybe not. This might be a stand-alone issue.

If my translation is right, "Awe Metal" is 'metalhead' in English while "2 Minggu" is "2 Weeks". "Awe" is a local dialect referring to a male and used by the people from East Coast especially from Kelantan state.

This issue is available in 2 versions and I opted for this one. I should have bought both version because it contains different materials/gifts I guess.

The gifts are hand-drawn postcard of the front cover, a A3 poster of the front cover, and CDr sample played by the artist himself @ Jerry, which instrumental/ambient piano songs or dungeon music if that's the right way to call it. The other version will have different gift suited with the concept of the front cover.

The issue is made pro-printed with full colored cover. I think for RM 20, we are getting more than the money spent especially with hand-drawn materials.

Now onto the content;

The first part is story about Awe Metal fall in love with a girl and his effort to make the 'next step'. All have been prepared but lastly, he found out she already married.

The second story is about Pojie black that is influenced by B****m's ambient albums and his 'journey' to become Count Grisnacht (musically of-course). He done the recording the songs at 1 night in a studio and went back home with the masterCD. Once completed the CD cover and he went back to the studio and found there is no studio. The location is actually an old graveyard. Traumatized with the event he went down with a fever for 2 weeks.

The arrangement is not like a normal comic which the stories are in small panels or boxes. These 2 stories, being drawn in 1 full page comic.

In here also featured snapshot of the upcoming Awe Metal comic. which look like normal comic (1 page with +-5 small panels) like normal comic. The story quite funny. Awe Metal, death metal fanatic but will cry if listen to love songs. Same with Pojie Black, black metal fanatics but cried when wathching the love scenes in Hindi movie. Does this refer to actual person? Afterall, we are all human with emotion ;-)

The last page is the autograph by the artist and with the name of the buyer. In this case it is my name in it.

Feed The Beast Issue 3 (2021)

Feed The Beast Issue 3 (2021)
68 pg, A4 size, in English, pro-printed

Interviews
Proscrito, Charnel Altar, Vanhelgd, Filthgrave, Sartegos, Binah, Desaster

My first issue of Feed the Beast. Thick issue (and so does the paper type). This is not the usual zine I have witness especially on the layout. Before the interview starts Ipp (the editor) present 1 full page of picture. Beside this page will have band's name with very short introduction and the bottom of this page is the band's discography only with lots of empty space. Flip to the next page you will see the interview.

Another new thing for me is the layout is not the same for every bands:
- Proscrito in cut n paste style
- Charnel Altar in normal 2 columns per page (white text, black background)
- Vanhelgd in normal 2 columns per page (not actually 2 columns, anyway...) on dark grey background with lots of pictures
- Filthgrave in normal 2 or 3 columns but uses 'ancient' looking font
- Sartegos in 3 columns per page, uses different font type and small font size with frame/ page border
- Binah; looks like a comic (weird one. never seen zine like this before)
- Desaster normal 2 columns, several font types used with some quotes at the bottom of the page

The interviews always starts with "Shalom..". The questions are like dissecting every aspect on the band's release, even why the frame is using such color in the artwork is being asked. You will never find same questions asked twice to other bands.

No editorial, no page number, no table of content and no reviews or articles. Contact address can be found on Desaster's special page.

And yes, DESASTER the highlight of the issue. Very in-depth interviews also feature the band's logo from the beginning till now and reprint of their old flyers included too together with a nice pouch to put them. Nicely done. Very long chat with Infernal, Tormentor, and logo master Christophe Szpajdel. 24 pages if I count it right and sadly, this to be continued in the next issue.

Nicely done issue! Now my hands are itchy to get their previous issues.
